Jess and Susan’s Class: Term 3 Week 4
Dear parents,
We’ve had a really fun time beginning our poetry unit called Planet Protectors this week. The children have been learning how to use words to create imagery that evokes the five senses. Using our planet as inspiration, they have been deliberately choosing powerful
words to create meaning – words matter!
We watched a beautiful short film called One Earth by Roman Pennes and wrote about the main ideas explored in the film and how they were communicated. The children are developing a stronger understanding of how paragraphs can be used to organise their writing and ideas.
In maths we’ve been working on missing-number equations involving both addition and subtraction. I noticed that the children needed a little extra revision in this area, so we revisited the idea that the equal sign means ‘the same as’ and that both sides of an equation need to balance. We also revisited the idea of number families as a useful strategy for solving missing-number equations.
With Meg’s class away in Canberra, our class had the opportunity to be elders in the school for a few days which included responsibilities such as selling ice- blocks and running canteen.
In other news, there is a new Insect Organisation that has been set up amongst some children in the class, with members having a range of allocated roles and responsibilities. The main aim of the organisation is to save injured insects and either rehabilitate them, or if they can’t be saved, give them a peaceful death. There was a funeral for Sting the bee at lunchtime on Friday. Also, Aidan is organising a Minecraft club with the aim to come together online to play the game after school together. I’m not yet sure how this will develop…
Next week will be a shift in gear as we have library on Monday, Science-Week morning on Tuesday, and Art Week (Currambena Comicon) from Wednesday to Friday. It’s going to be a busy one!
Warm wishes
Jess and Susan
