The Role of the School Council

As a registered unlisted not for profit corporate entity limited by guarantee, Currambena is a public company with a board of directors, subject to the provisions of the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) and the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission Act 2012.

The school’s regulators are the Department of Education and ASIC. Currambena’s governance is overseen by the School Council whose primary role is to provide strategic direction, policy direction, financial oversight, and strategic risk management to ensure the long-term sustainability and success of the school. The Council plays a vital role in shaping the direction of the school, supporting our mission, and upholding our values.

The School Council, while retaining ultimate responsibility, delegates responsibilities of the day-to-day management of Currambena to the School Coordinator and the teachers.

Policy Development

Currambena is managed through an elected Council comprised of members of the parent body and staff representatives. The Council Members form the Board of Directors of Currambena Ltd and are responsible for the governance and management of Currambena School in accordance with applicable NSW and Commonwealth Laws.

The School Council

While retaining ultimate responsibility, delegate responsibilities of the day-to-day management of Currambena to the School Coordinator and the teachers. As it sees fit, the Council may further delegate responsibilities to sub- committees, convened as necessary. Attached to the right to delegate, the School Council has a responsibility to ensure that delegations are being carried out within the requirements of statute and common law and the School’s own policies.

Our Council Composition

The Council at Currambena is composed of dedicated staff and parents who bring a wealth of experience and a shared commitment to the school’s vision. Our School Council follows democratic principles aligned to the philosophy of the school.
About Council

Council members comprise of at least 6 parent volunteers, three teachers and Education Coordinator and Business Administrator.  Parent members are elected by the school community and serve a term of two years. The three teacher positions are elected by the teaching staff on a yearly basis. The Education Coordinator and Business Administrator positions are permanent members of the Council.

Typically members of the community with relevant skills or experience are encouraged to consider nomination, bringing together their diverse expertise to meet the needs and challenges of the school. Together, they strive to ensure Currambena is a leader in innovative and inclusive education.
