Our Origin Story

Our Origin Story

Currambena was established in 1969 in Sydney’s Lower North Shore (Lane Cove) on Cammeraygal land by a group of parents, teachers and academics committed to providing an alternative educational approach.

For over five decades since, Currambena has embraced global-leading, evidence-based pedagogy—and is leading the way with democratic schooling in Australia.

Since our inception, we’ve taken a joyful and intentional approach to education and have continually sought best practices to deliver education and inspire learning and reinforce the importance of relationships and connection to self, people and communities.

We regularly engage with research into new educational practices and consider how any advancements in education might be reflected in Currambena’s practices.

Governance at Currambena

Our diverse community of educators and families come together to lead the governance of Currambena through a School Council.

The Council is composed of elected parents and teachers working as a board and governing according to the rules and standards of the Independent Schools Association.

The school has a Charter, Articles of Association and a policy framework that guide education and learning along with the business and operations aspects of Currambena.

The Council meets monthly and works in conjunction with parent and staff volunteer sub-committees to achieve projects and initiatives across the School.
