Wendy’s Group Week 4 Term 3
A big week for us all in our group, acknowledging some very mixed feelings about my decision to move away from full time classroom teaching at the end of the year. The children were all very kind and accepting, while at the same time able to articulate other feelings which have come up such as disappointment and sadness. I am so pleased that Meg will be taking the group from 2026 and I’m looking forward to working with her to make it a smooth transition and a fabulous year for everyone.
Our new student teacher, Loki, started with us this week. He is a Masters of Teaching candidate and is an ex-student of Currambena whose mother taught here for some years in the 1990s. I always enjoy hearing about pracs at other schools and Loki has been amazed at how different things are here at Currambena compared with the traditional schools where he has completed other pracs. He has particularly mentioned how comfortably the children ask for help with their work, demonstrating a sense of agency in their learning which is not evident in other classes he has seen.
In English this week, we considered the use of time sequencing and conscious vocabulary choices by the author Jackie French in the book, ‘Plague’. We looked at the types of sentences and revisited the different purposes these sentences serve in text. Everyone then wrote their own stories making sure to use some time sequencing and some conscious vocabulary choices to enhance their stories. It was great to
read the stories they created and see how the children are developing as writers.
In Maths, we had fun on Monday with a variety of activities relating to the topic of Chance or Probability, tossing dice and coins, recording outcomes and making spinners with unequal chances of outcomes. We assigned probabilities to a series of statements and positioned these along a metre ruler, with older students using decimal, percentage and fraction ways to represent the probabilities. Lots of fun.
Mini PIPs on countries have begun well and we have also spent some time investigating electricity using batteries, wires, switches and light globes. It was fun to see the experiments each class conducted on Friday afternoon for Science Week.
Thank you to the parents who have already attended or signed up for parent interviews. Please email if you haven’t yet made a time. There are still some times available in the coming week and I would very much like to complete all interviews by Friday 22nd.
The Class Ball on Friday night was a great success. Congratulations to the Ball Committee and many thanks to everyone who helped with this event. It is fabulous to see the children taking on the task of organising something like this and having such fun with it. Just Dance was a highlight!
Next week is Book Week! We have author Maryam Master coming to speak with the older children and Siobhan is coming for the younger groups on Tuesday afternoon. On Thursday and Friday afternoons from 2:30 til 3:30 we have a BUY A BOOK EVENT for our school library. The lovely people from Bookery will be here with a load of books for us to choose from and all titles will be ones we would like to acquire for our library. We had hoped that the library would be ready for a grand opening next week but that was not to be, especially now that Amelia’s group is needing it as their classroom. Please come down to the staff room (if it’s wet) or outside the staff room (if it’s fine) and choose a book to donate to the school from your family.
On Friday of Book Week we’ll have the annual book character parade! This will be straight after School Meeting at around about 10 or 10:15. Bring your cameras and come along if you can!
Lastly, please note toe dates for our end of year camp at Jervis Bay. Monday 1st December to Friday 5th December. We’ll be at Bristol Point on Site 1 and we will need parent helpers so contact me please if you are interested. Tents, cooking our own food, beaches, sessions with Uncle Bernie… and the Thursday night ceremony for our Year 6s. More details to come.
Have a great week.
Love,
Wendy
