From Jess and Susan Week 4 Term 3
Dear Parents,
The children are just so engaged at the moment and full of enthusiasm for learning and all the experiences that are happening at school. It’s such a delight!
In maths, we’ve been focusing on learning our doubles (×2) and then using this knowledge to make connections with the four times tables. It’s been fantastic to see the children confidently exploring these links and developing strategies to manipulate numbers more flexibly. We’ll continue to build on this as we move forward with multiplication and number reasoning.
In English, we continued exploring Little Red Riding Hood and challenged ourselves to consider the story from the Wolf’s point of view. What if the Wolf told the story? Would it sound completely different? The children wrote letters from the Wolf, describing the terrible day he’d had, including tales of the humans who were chopping down trees, destroying the animals homes, and leaving them starving. It was a fun and engaging way to think critically and explore different perspectives.
To celebrate Science Week, the children voted to make oobleck. This idea emerged from a connection they made with the Rock and Water program. They were fascinated by how oobleck behaves—solid and hard like a rock when force is applied, yet fluid and runny like water when handled gently. What a beautiful discovery!
After an exciting discovery of slugs hiding in the compost bin, the children were buzzing with ideas. Inspired by their new (temporary) class pets, the children decided to build a “slug hotel.” They spent their Friday afternoon designing and constructing the perfect enclosure—complete with cozy hiding spots, natural materials, and plenty of lettuce to keep them well fed! It was a wonderful mix of hands-on learning, teamwork, and fun!
Happy weekend,
Jess and Susan
