Amelia’s class week 3 term 3

Hi everyone,

It has been lovely to speak with some of you already for our parent interviews. I am looking forward to those in the coming week.

This week we have adjusted to our temporary space in the library. The children have been managing extraordinary well, and we have had a number of conversations about adaptability, flexibility and the nature of change being a constant part of life. That being said, the group is definitely feeling a bit disoriented, and a number of them have found managing their learning more difficult than usual. We have brought up more of our resources together over Friday, so hopefully that will help our space feel more homely.  We are likely to stay in this space for a while longer, at least for the next week until the hole under our classroom has been fixed.

Some highlights over the week definitely included our wrestling session on Tuesday for sport. Some of the children opted out and engaged with skipping instead, but those that did engage had a fantastic time. We set up mats in the library space, and made clear agreements before starting. We incorporated some of our ‘Rock and Water’ principles, such as doing a salute before starting where we say ‘rock’ and ‘water’ while putting our hands over hearts. We end the salute by saying ‘respect’ to our partner. The children were very respectful, safe, and showed great sportsmanship during this session. I will send out an email as soon as I know the completion date!

Following on from our learning on Australian money, this week we began looking at some addition and subtraction strategies. We starting with doubling and doubling plus 1 up to 20 and beyond. The children did fantastically engaging with these concepts and practiced solving the problems in a range of ways, with some trying to be automatic and memorise their doubles.

Next week is science week, so we will be engaging in a number of science activities, in particular making our own volcanoes following on from our lesson this week in our ‘Natural Disasters’ unit.

Next week is our turn to go to the Lane Cove library so please pack your library books for returns!
