Wendy’s Group Week 6 Term 2
Winter has definitely arrived this week! I’m so glad we have the floor heating working. It is lovely and warm in our room now.
This week’s Class Meeting decided to change the date for the planned class ball. It will now be on Friday, 15th August in week 4 of next term. This gives the committee more time to get everything organised. Please note the date and let us know if there is a problem. We will need at least two chaperones on the night so please let your child know if you could be available for this.
This week in English we’ve been concentrating on comprehension skills both oral and written, using our focus text, “Runt” and some articles about historical characters and events. Answering a mixture of literal and inferential questions in full sentences can be challenging! We’ve also been extending our spelling and vocabulary skills with words like dystopian and conspiratorially included in our list! We’ve almost finished reading “Laughter is the Best Ending” by Australian author, Maryam Master, and there is a chance that she will visit Currambena during book week next term.
In Maths, everyone is making great progress in their skills with fractions, adding and subtracting, and working with proper and improper fractions and mixed numbers. We have also been solving word problems involving fractions of quantities.
Personal Interest Projects and historical research topics are going well too and I expect we’ll start history presentations next week.
I’ve been having fun doing a few sessions on conflict resolution skills with Meg’s group. They are such a delight! This week, I started with a short puppet show in which a chicken had their sandcastle knocked down by a koala. When I asked the children what the chicken might need, the responses included: a sorry, a conversation, a hug and help to rebuild the sandcastle. Their level of emotional awareness and empathy is wonderful! I am so much looking forward to working with the parents and Currambena staff who have signed up for the CR course on Saturday 14th. Please make sure you have completed the personal details form and sent the money for lunch and materials.
We have also started doing some Personal Development sessions in our group.. this week we focussed on respect in different contexts and what actions from others help us feel safe. Some very wise and perceptive responses to questions about what helps them feel safe. Emotional IQ in evidence!
I hope you all enjoy the long weekend and manage to stay warm.
Love,
Wendy
