Wendy’s Group Week 4 Term 1
The term is flying past already and we are having a great time in our group.
This week we have added rocks and seaweed to our ocean artwork in the classroom, building up the layers to create a rich underwater scene. In English we have been looking at a book called A is for Australian Reefs by artist and author Frane Lessac. Our student teacher, Keeghan, showed us a video of her working in her studio, and we’re researching the major reefs around Australia, developing mini presentations and practising writing using informative language. Our water session with Jess’s group on Monday looked at ways water exerts power in the environment and can also be harnessed to create energy.
In Maths, we’ve moved on to representing numbers, a topic which is about the decimal system and place value, number lines and relating decimals to percentages. It’s essential grounding for all other maths, so a very important topic.
PIPs are moving along well and everyone has settled on a topic now. PIPs are due on Friday 21st March and everyone must do a final proofreading with an adult…. so please help with this if you’re asked. All the children are using Google slides to create their presentations, and so they all have access to these from home computers. It would be great to ask your children to show you what they’ve done so far and help them with spelling or punctuation issues… and any tricky pronunciations!
At Class Meeting early in the term, the group voted that we would have afternoon tea at the end of the day on three days of the week.. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. So each week, we ask volunteers to bring something for afternoon tea on each of these days. So far, the system is working really well. Thank you so much for your support with it!
Our stall on Thursday was a huge success and raised over $500 for Kateryna in Ukraine. Thank you so much to everyone who supported the children with this. And congratulations to Emme, Mabel and all the kids for organising everything on the day! It was great fun for everyone! I first met Kateryna and her students at One Crazy School in Vinnytsia via Zoom a week before the war began and I have been part of an international group from schools like Currambena all around the world who have been supporting her over the past three years. She has helped provide food and medical care for people in need, and her school and the safe bunker she has built has been used by refugees displaced by the fighting and for events such as playback theatre to assist adults coping with the traumas of war.
Permission forms for camp in Week 6 have gone home this week. Please carefully complete both sides of this form and return it to school asap. Thank you to those who have offered to help with driving there or back (or both). Jess and I will start sorting cabins and drivers in the coming days. We’ll also send home a list of what to pack! All very exciting!
And finally, thank you to Sarah D, Faith and Keeghan for holding the fort on Friday when I had some serious dental work done. All good now!
