Wendy’s Group Week 3 Term 4
Already week 3! Concert coming up in Week 6 and Jervis Bay camp for our oldest kids in Week 7, so lots to do!
Many thanks to the parents who came to the Camp Meeting on Wednesday night last week. I now have a good idea of how many drivers and helpers I can count on for this camp. Please watch your emails for camp details and a permission form. The camp cost will be invoiced from the office.
Jervis Bay is a week long camp, in tents, where we do our own cooking and plan the week’s activities together. It is a wonderful chance to be together in a very beautiful part of the world and is a very important part of our program for Year 5 and 6 students. Our Year 4 children will be going to a different camp, three days in cabins in Week 8, with their age peers from Jess’s group. Next year, they’ll go to Jervis.
This week we have finished writing our play and begun proper rehearsals… all very exciting. The children have written it completely by themselves and it’s very impressive! Props and costumes are in production and lines being learned.
In other aspects of our week, we’ve moved into learning about mass in maths, using an equal arm balance and hoping to do some cooking next week using different types of scales. We’ve considered character traits for different people in our shared book and elsewhere and considered how we find evidence for these. Handwriting continues to be a focus and some children are writing amazing, long stories. We’re completing our geography studies from last term and looked at some very unusual Australian landforms. Everyone is also enjoying the drama sessions on Mondays with our very talented Bec!
A highlight of the week was the Sydney Dance Company excursion on Tuesday to the matinee performance of Unungkati Yantatja – One with the Other. It was an hour of extraordinary music, including yidaki playing from William Barton, also the composer, and exquisite dancing, costumes and set. We had great seats at the front of the dress circle and the children’s responses in post performance appreciation were both thoughtful and insightful. There was a strong connection for us with our developing understanding of indigenous culture and also performance, especially dance. We did some improvised dancing before the excursion and will follow this with more discussion and movement next week.
Thank you to the people who came along to the maintenance afternoon on Tuesday. It’s great to see the water course that the children voted for coming into being! As always, thank you so much to all our volunteers. The children benefit so much from seeing the whole community working together!
We missed swimming this week because of the excursion but we will be back at the pool this week on Tuesday morning. Please help children remember swimmers etc… we had some forgotten last time!
A group of guitar players did have fun learning the Loco song for the Spanish Day of the Dead performance on Wednesday! Thank you to Carolina!
Another highlight was the Halloween parade on Friday. Kitty, Emme and Mabel were on duty as MCs for the introductions and some of the costumes were incredible! Lots of fun. Well done everyone!
