Wendy’s Class Week 9 Term 2
What a fabulous event our Lantern Festival was on Tuesday night! Huge congratulations and thanks to Crafty Chris and the artists who worked with the children on those magnificent creations. We were so lucky with the weather and the whole 2025 Art Week was a resounding success. How lucky are we to be able to give such priority to creativity and community like this? I am very much looking forward to seeing the film Jackie is putting together for us.
In our group this week, we’ve started on the maths topic Data, looking at different types of graphs and what they can be best used to display. Dot plots were the main focus this week. We also wrote about the lantern festival (see Kitty’s piece below) or continued story writing, We also looked at literary techniques such as metaphor, simile and alliteration as found in our mentor text, Runt. Some of us wrote poetry, like this from Ollie:
I am the wind and the wind is me.
Together we soar in symphony.
PIP presentations have also been a feature this week with some very interesting topics and confident presentations. Some of the children are true experts in using Google slides creatively with titles and backgrounds, using pictures and moving images. It’s very impressive.
It was also very impressive hearing the children’s responses to the questions from Brett Lee from Internet Safe Education in his presentation for them on Wednesday afternoon. The children showed a strong understanding of internet safety and answered Brett’s questions well. He had five key messages for the children:
* The internet is public and permanent
* Always protect your private information.
* Someone you only know on the internet is a stranger.
* There are rules for using computers and the internet.
* Always talk to a trusted adult if there’s a problem.
Brett returned in the evening to give a presentation for parents which was excellent. It was a shame more parents were not there. Luckily, the school has access for 12 months to his company’s website through what they call their Cyber Safety Hub, a brilliant resource for parents and carers. See details elsewhere in this newsletter. The five key messages for parents were:
* Communicate with your kids.
* Set clear rules and boundaries.
* Stay up to date with apps and programs.
* Consider and use parental controls.
* Be the one who makes the final decisions.

On Tuesday, 25th June, at Tambourine Bay, a Loch Ness monster was seen. No-one knew where it came from except Currambena Primary school…
For the last three week days, Currambena has been busy. The playground was full of bamboo, paper, glue and paint. Currambena was up to something. They were making a Loch Ness monster.
The whole school split into little groups and we started unpapering the dragon (a lantern we made in 2022) so we could paper it again and hang it from a tree while others were making bamboo structures of the Loch Ness monster.
The next day, the structures for the Loch Ness monster were complete and we were now moving to papering the Loch Ness monster. We went in our little groups and dipped paper in glue. The glue then stuck it to the bamboo structures.
On our final day, we hung all the papered structures to the rafters outside a classroom and spray painted the dragon. A little later in the day, we painted the Loch Ness monster and at 5pm on Tuesday evening the social started ad we sailed the monster on the water.
Everybody was having fun but out of nowhere the Loch Ness monster had caught on fire.
Luckily, a few kids and adults were on a canoe with a spray bottle and they put out the fire. Written by Kitty
