The Axolotls: Term 3 Week 8

Dear families,

It has been a creative and inquisitive week in the Axolotl class. Here is a summary of our learning:

  • Craft with Crafty Chris – exploring colour harmonies and accents, looking at the abstract paintings by Paul Klee.
  • Class meeting chaired by Jack and Deeba. Topics included: respecting personal trays by Joanna, No hiding toys by Kiaan, iPads by Zahli, personal space by Anja, pauses in tip games by Leo (Vote), respect by Deeba and drama play by Anja.
  • Observing our bean seeds and noticing them germinate and grow. Planting some of our seedlings in soil and pots in the garden. Recording in a bean diary.
  • Maths/Science combined – sequencing the life cycle of a bean using ordinal numbers.
  • ‘Flowing together’ Geography unit of work. Discussing what we know about water and bodies of water. Learning about billabongs and other natural bodies of water.
  • Spanish on Wednesday with Carolina – ‘The hen and her friends’ story.
  • Music on Monday with Kym, singing ‘You are my sunshine’, learning Auslan signs and playing the ukulele. Drumming on chairs.

Juniors (Early Stage 1)

  • Soundwaves: th, th. Sentence writing and special word: there. Many children needed to practice the position of their tongue when making the ‘th/th’ sound in different words, it would be great if you could practice this at home.(th for the – tongue at tip of teeth, th for thin – tongue sticks out).
  • Mathematics – describing position, giving and following directions, left and right.
  • Handwriting – u (wave letters and patterns)
  • Literacy stations – group reading with Joanna, Soundwaves books, writing/tracing.

Elders (Stage 1)

  • Soundwaves: or, ore, a, aw, au.
  • Mathematics – representing and describing the positions of objects in familiar locations. Left and right.
  • Handwriting – u (wave letters) words and sentences.
  • Literacy stations – group reading and comprehension/ extension with Joanna, Soundwaves books, sight word writing and sentences.
  • GIP (Group interest project) ‘Insect Detectives’ with Faith and the Year 1 children. The Stage 1 children are beginning to prepare slides to present their project. There will be a presentation on the last week of term which you are invited to attend – Thursday 24th September at 10am TBC.

Next Thursday 17th will be Summerhill Day. There will also be a sausage sizzle to fundraise for Nepal, children are encouraged to bring along gold coins.

Please remind your child to bring their sun hat to school every day. Lighter clothing and runners are recommended for sport on Tuesday afternoons.

I am looking for a family who would be keen to help feed Candy the axolotl during the school holidays. Please let me know if you would like to help.

Have a lovely weekend everyone,
Joanna
