The Axolotls: Term 3 Week 4

Dear families,

It has been a collaborative and inquisitive week in the Axolotl class. Here is a summary of our learning this week:

  • Craft with Crafty Chris – animation on iPads, creating a ‘Currambena monster’ withplasticine.
  • Social skill focus – making appropriate and safe play choices. Reflecting on our choices and our class agreement. Asking for help.
  • ‘Our living world’ Science unit of work. What do living things need to stay alive? We investigated wombats, galahs, and turtles, and the children discussed and recorded what each animal needs. The children were particularly curious about how animals protect and defend themselves in different ways, and how they create homes to keep themselves safe.
  • Sport on Tuesday: Pickleball (Kiaan, Zahli, Anja, Deeba), Games at school (Liam), Basketball (June, Nico, Leo, Jack, Ravi, Felix, Solly, Kioto), Indigenous games (Ezra).
  • Sustaining on Friday, helping to care for our school.
  • Spanish on Wednesday with Carolina – Gardening outside and learning the vocabulary for plants.
  • Music on Monday with Kym.
  • Visiting Lane Cove Library on Monday afternoon.

Juniors (Early Stage 1)

  • Soundwaves: ss, ff. Special words: see, go.
  • Mathematics – exploring capacity and volume. Comparing the capacity and volume of containers by filling/ pouring water and non-standard units.
  • Handwriting – s (snake letters and patterns)
  • Literacy stations – group reading with Joanna, Soundwaves books, writing/tracing.
  • Zones of regulation – exploring big emotions and what they feel like. Sharing strategies that help us come back to the ‘green’ zone such as; breathe, walk away, find a quiet space, talk to a trusted adult, ask for help, walk outside.

Elders (Stage 1)

  • Soundwaves: ar, a.
  • Mathematics – exploring capacity and volume. Comparing the capacity and volume of containers by filling/ pouring water and non-standard units.
  • Handwriting – s (snake letters) words and sentences.
  • Literacy stations – group reading and comprehension/ extension with Joanna, Soundwaves books, sight word writing and sentences.
  • GIP (Group interest project) ‘Insect Detectives’ with Faith and the Year 1 children.

Please be aware that I will be holding parent-teacher interviews in our classroom after school over the next few weeks.

Next week we will continue our learning about protective behaviours, including private body parts, appropriate language and play, feeling safe, and seeking help.

Next Tuesday we will have Science morning and the children will be involved in experiments in mixed-age groups across classrooms. Wednesday – Friday is Art week and Crafty Chris will be joined by local artists to lead a fun-filled week including; charcoal animations, plasticine animations, zine and comic creation and film making.
