The Axolotls: Term 3 Week 3

Dear families,

It has been such a pleasure to be back with the Axolotl class this week. I had a very warm welcome back, and the love and understanding from you all has meant so much to me. Thank you. Sarah and the children had a very happy and settled time whilst I was away, I am very proud.

Here is a summary of our learning this week:

  • Craft with Crafty Chris – animation drawings.
  • Class meeting chaired by Solly and Nico. Topics discussed: Fidget toy agreements (Joanna), private body parts (Joanna), butterflies (Kioto and Deeba), breaking creations (Jack), chairs (Leo and June).
  • Social skill focus – listening to our peers when they say ‘stop’ or when they express their feelings/ needs. Asking for help.
  • ‘Our living world’ Science unit of work. What makes one kind of animal different from another? Is it a living thing? How do you know? Exploring Non-fiction texts such as ‘My first book of minibeasts ’and ‘The big book of bugs’ (Ezra’s).
  • The children had so many questions about living things this week, and they shared their knowledge and curiosity. We particularly enjoyed researching bombardier beetles after Ezra talked to us about their unusual defence mechanisms!
  • Sport on Tuesday: Pickleball (Kiaan, Zahli, Anja, Deeba), Games at school (Liam), Basketball (June, Nico, Leo, Jack, Ravi, Felix, Solly, Kioto), Indigenous games (Ezra).
  • Sustaining on Friday, helping to care for our school.
  • Spanish on Wednesday – Spanish story ‘The hen and her friends’.

Juniors (Early Stage 1) :

  • Soundwaves: z, ck, ng.Special words: his, we, are.
  • Mathematics – 3D shapes and properties. Exploring and making prisms.
  • Joanna “Is it a prism?” Felix “No, it’s a rectangular prism.”
  • Handwriting – z (rainy day letters and patterns)
  • Literacy stations – group reading with Joanna, Soundwaves books, writing/tracing.

Elders (Stage 1):

  • Soundwaves: p, pp, r, rr.
  • Mathematics – 3D shapes and properties. Exploring and describing prisms.
  • Handwriting – ‘z’ (rainy day letters) words and sentences.
  • Literacy stations – group reading and comprehension/ extension with Joanna, Soundwaves books, sight word writing and sentences.
  • GIP (Group interest project) ‘Insect Detectives’ with Faith and the Year 1 children.

Please read the email sent on Thursday this week, in regards to signing up for a parent-teacher interview. Individual child records will be emailed to you before your interview.

Next week we will continue our learning about protective behaviours, including private body parts, appropriate language and play, feeling safe, and seeking help.

Next Monday (10th) we will be visiting Lane Cove Library in the afternoon. Please provide your child with a small bag to carry their books e.g. book bag/ tote bag.
