The Axolotls: Term 2 Week 7
Dear families,
It has been a very creative and expressive week in the Axolotl class. Pepper Garner (relief teacher) taught the children on Wednesday and Thursday and I am very proud of the children’s flexibility and engagement in learning whilst I was away. Here is a summary of our learning this week:
- Tuesday Sport – Tennis at Lane Cove Tennis club. Coach Juan practised racket and ball skills with the children and introduced simple coordination games.
- Social skill focus – recognising and naming early warning signs in our bodies when we feel scared or uncomfortable. Stop, go, tell. Discussing when and how we need to seek help. Identifying safe adults who we trust.
- Responding to the book ‘Cooee Mittigar’ by Jasmine Seymour and Leanne Mulgo Watson. Listening to Aboriginal musical instruments and exploring animal sounds.
- Exploring sound in Science and Technology. The children followed their designs and created their own musical instruments using recycled materials. They’re amazing!
- Craft with Crafty Chris – monoprints, and decorating our musical instruments.
- Sustaining on Friday, helping to care for our school.
- Spanish on Wednesday – la comida (food).
- Music with Kim.
- Preparing and priming the tank, getting ready for our pet axolotl. Discussing the responsibilities involved in caring for a pet.

Next week we will continue our learning about protective behaviours. We will be talking about private body parts and how we show respect for the parts of our bodies that are covered by clothes. The children will continue to explore ways to say “no/ stop” and to seek and ask for help when they feel uncomfortable or worried. It would be great if you could support by having these conversations with your child at home too.
Thank you, and have a lovely long weekend, Monday is a public holiday, so we’ll see you on Tuesday.
Joanna
