The Axolotls: Term 2 Week 5

Dear families,

It has been an enterprising week in the Axolotl class. Here is a summary of our learning this week:

  • Planning and being part of a big bake and toy sale to raise money for our class axolotl.
  • Craft with Crafty Chris – making big signs for our bake and toy sale. Adding colour wash to our drawings.
  • Social skill focus – saying goodbye and managing big feelings. Negotiating roles and agreements for our toy and bake sale.
  • The children continue to work with their ‘talk partners’ for short discussions and experiences to support our areas of learning. This week, each child was allocated a new talk partner.
  • Class jobs – as suggested by the children during class meetings last term, the children have been allocated jobs such as bell monitor, chair monitor, librarian etc.
  • Recording a recount of our toy and bake sale by drawing and writing.
  • Responding to the book ‘Looking at light’ and discussing our knowledge and understanding about light, dark, and shadow. Setting up a ‘make a rainbow’ experiment with mirrors and water, recording our findings in a diagram.
  • Sustaining on Friday, helping to care for our school.
  • Spanish on Wednesday – las frutas (fruit).

Juniors (Early Stage 1)

  • Soundwaves: r, g. Sentence writing.
  • Mathematics – number patterns and forming groups.
  • Handwriting – r (kangaroo hop letters and patterns)
  • Literacy stations – group reading with Joanna, Soundwaves books, writing/tracing.

Elders (Stage 1)

  • Soundwaves: ai, ay, a-e.
  • Mathematics – grouping and sharing. Multiplication and division problems. Arrays.
  • Handwriting – r (kangaroo hop letters) words and sentences.
  • Literacy stations – group reading and comprehension/ extension with Joanna,
  • Soundwaves books, sight word writing and sentences.
  • Individual reading with a parent helper.

Please read the email sent on Thursday this week, for a more detailed update on our week in the axolotl class. I now have confirmed 1 parent helper for our Tuesday excursion, and 1 parent helper for our Thursday excursion. It would be great to have 1 more parent helper for each excursion.

Next week we will continue our learning about protective behaviours, including how to manage and express big feelings, and keeping ourselves safe around people who we don’t know.
