The Axolotls: Term 2 Week 3

Dear families,

It has been a social and inquisitive week in the Axolotl class. Here is a summary of our learning this week:

  • Craft with Crafty Chris – beading, and wax candles.
  • Social skill focus – including others and broadening friendship groups. Speaking up when we feel uncomfortable or when we need help.
  • The children continue to work with their ‘talk partners’ for short discussions and experiences to support our areas of learning.
  • Class jobs – as suggested by the children during class meetings last term, the children have been allocated jobs such as bell monitor, chair monitor, librarian etc.
  • Pickleball at Galuwa recreational centre with Susan.
  • Responding to the story ‘Djinang Bonar Seeing Seasons’ by Abony Froome. Exploring the 6 Noongar seasons through discussing the illustrations. Painting one of the Noongar seasons and describing choices in colour and natural features.
  • Investigating light and shadow in Science. Exploring the properties of different materials; opaque, translucent, transparent.
  • Sustaining on Friday, helping to care for our school. The children worked really hard this week!
  • Spanish on Wednesday – vocabulary for items of clothing.
  • During Free Friday, many of the children visited the craft room to finish off their wax candles.
  • Individual Mathematics assessment with Joanna

Juniors (Early Stage 1)

  • Soundwaves: n. Special words: in and.
  • Mathematics – Sorting and making 2D shapes, describing properties.
  • Handwriting – o (back flip letters and patterns)
  • Literacy stations – group reading with Joanna, Soundwaves books, writing/tracing.

Elders (Stage 1)

  • Soundwaves: u o, rhyme and word building.
  • Mathematics – 2D shapes, making polygons, superimposing, measuring area.
  • Handwriting – o (backflip letters) words and sentences.
  • Literacy stations – group reading and comprehension/ extension with Joanna, Soundwaves books, recount writing.

We are so fortunate to have a wealth of languages within our class and community. If any parents would like to come in and read a story aloud to the class, in your home language, we would love to welcome you. If you would like to do this, please let me, or our parent reps know, and we’ll schedule in a time.
