The Axolotls: Term 2 Week 2

Dear families,

It has been an active and creative week in the Axolotl class. Here is a summary of our learning this week:

• Craft with Crafty Chris – continuing to explore colour and tones. Marble art.
• Social skill focus – including others and broadening friendship groups.
• The children continue to work with their ‘talk partners’ for short discussions and experiences to support our areas of learning.
• Class jobs – as suggested by the children during class meetings last term, the children have been allocated jobs such as bell monitor, chair monitor, librarian etc. The children have decided that these jobs will rotate every 3 days so that everyone gets a fair turn.
• Soccer at Pottery Green with Susan. As always, the children showed a great sense of responsibility when leaving our school and walking through the community. We were very proud that everyone joined in with the skill building activities on the oval, it was so much fun.
• Responding to the story ‘Djinang Bonar Seeing Seasons’ by Abony Froome. Exploring the 6 Noongar seasons through discussing the illustrations. Taking a bare-foot walk outside and observing clues about the seasons by using the senses. Looking at the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Language map, and a world map. Locating places that we know.
• Sustaining on Friday, helping to care for our school.
• Spanish on Wednesday – vocabulary for items of clothing.
• A visit from our parent reps Thai and Sam on Thursday to discuss the possibility of getting a pet axolotl, and developing ideas with the children about how we can fundraise. The discussion included:

-What would an axolotl need to stay happy and healthy?

-What would our responsibilities be, to help care for it?

Fundraising ideas – bake stall, toy stall, craft stall, donations.

• During free play, many of the children initiated cardboard creation projects and worked collaboratively. They had some great design ideas!

Juniors (Early Stage 1)

• Soundwaves: f. Special word: I.
• Mathematics – 2D shape hunt, finding a line of symmetry in 2D shapes.
• Handwriting – n (kangaroo hop letters and patterns)

Elders (Stage 1)

• Soundwaves: g gg. Blending.
• Mathematics – 2D shape hunt, recording in a tally/table, exploring polygons and describing features, finding the line/s of symmetry in 2D shapes.
• Handwriting – n (kangaroo hop letters) words and sentences.
• Individual reading with our parent helper

Please remember that next Tuesday (5th) we continue our sports programme, which will be pickleball. Please make sure that your child applies sunscreen in the morning, wears sport shoes, and brings a sun hat and water bottle.

We would love donations of cardboard boxes/ materials for the classroom to continue our creative projects!
