The Axolotls: Term 1 Week 5

Dear families,

It has been a social and creative week in the Axolotl class. Here is a summary of our learning this week:

  • Craft with Peppa, Andrea, and Faith – investigating sea slugs – ‘nudi branch’ and creating a class mural. (Displayed outside our classroom)
  • Group interest project with Amelia’s class – Oceans. Investigating waves and tsunamis. Experimenting with air pressure and making our own ‘waves’ in water.
  • Social skill focus – speaking up. Reading and responding to the story ‘Speak up’ by Nathan Bryon. Discussing topics that matter to us and how we can make a difference by speaking up.
  • Talking about what we like to do with our families, recording through drawing and writing.
  • Learning about Rosa Parks and how she led a peaceful protest to make a positive change.
  • Enjoying fruit from our community fruit bowl.
  • Chairing the school meeting – thank you Hazel and Anja for taking the chair for our class

Juniors (Early Stage 1)

  • Literacy stations (with Joanna) – fine motor skill development, colouring-in and blending sounds to hear cvc words e.g. ‘hat’
  • Soundwaves – blending – blending sounds to make words. Segmenting – breaking up words into sounds.
  • Mathematics – Representing number – subitising. Instantly recognising the number of items in a group without needing to count them e.g. dice.
  • Handwriting – Rainy day letters (such as i)
  • Team sport games with Joanna. Practising fundamental movement skills

Elders (Stage 1)

  • Literacy stations (with Amelia) – group reading, Soundwaves books.
  • Soundwaves – k,c,q,ck,x. Cl, cr blends. Reading and spelling cvc, cvcc, ccvcc words.
  • Mathematics – Combining and separating quantities. Number bonds and the relationship between addition and subtraction.
  • Handwriting – Rainy day letters (words and sentences with ‘i’)
  • Individual reading with Joanna/ Parent helper (every child)
  • Swimming with Amelia’s class

There have been many discussions between teachers, children, and parents about toys from home this week. Please make sure that toy value does not exceed $30. Your child is responsible for caring for their toy, and packing it away in their bag/locker during learning time (sometimes comfort toys are excepted). We encourage each child to bring in just 1 toy. They have the choice about whether to let their friends have a turn, and many of the children have initiated negotiations, and demonstrated kindness. Thank you for your support.

Just a reminder to please return any school car seats, if you have borrowed one.
