The Axolotls Term 1 Week 2

We have had a very happy and settled week in the Axolotl class. The children continue to start their day with independence, and they are developing familiarity with the routine.

This week the Axolotl class have been asking questions and inquiring about axolotls. Did you know that they are an endangered species, and they can regenerate their own limbs?! Please come into the classroom to see our display. The children recorded diagrams individually, and in partners.

This week the Axolotl class have been exploring number formation in Maths, and our elders have been recording simple calculations.

On Tuesday, the Axolotl class enjoyed sport with the oldest children at Currambena. Meg’s class led a team game called ‘Mr Crocodile’ and they set up an obstacle course for the children to navigate.

In craft, the children have collaboratively created a banner for our classroom. Please see our new decorated windows.

Below is a little more information about the term ahead.

Our Parent Information Evening will be on Thursday the 12th February, which will be an important night for more detail, questions, and discussions about the year ahead.

English

  • We will continue our systematic approach to phonics using the Soundwaves program across the entire school. Amelia and I will be working together on a large portion of our English learning, particularly in sharing Literacy Stations each Monday and Tuesday for the elders in Axolotl class. This week, we started Soundwaves with the newer members of the class and they really enjoyed a sorting activity, based on initial phonemes (letter sounds).

‘What Matters?’ unit

  • This term, each class will be learning about the topic ‘What Matters?’. The children will also engage in a number of activities during their craft sessions that align to our learning of the week. We will have a festival at the end of the term to showcase their learning and creations.

Music

  • Kym will continue teaching music across the school on Mondays.

Craft

  • Sarah D will be running craft this term while Crafty Chris is on long service leave. Our craft sessions are on Wednesdays and Thursdays, so please send your child to school with enclosed shoes. They cannot participate in craft in open-toed shoes.

Spanish

  • Carolina will continue teaching Spanish on a Wednesday.

Lane Cove Library

  • We will be going to the Lane Cove Library every 3rd week along with Amelia’s group. Our first session will be Monday 16th February. If your child does not yet have a library card, you will need to visit the library before our visit and organise one for them.

Physical Education

  • Sport/ P.E. is every Tuesday afternoon for the whole school, and sometimes we combine across classes. This term, for the Axolotl class, we will be focusing on fundamental movement skills, team games, and our ‘Rock and Water’ program. A program that promotes well-being and conflict resolution for children.
  • Later in the term, we will take the class to the local park for an excursion.
  • Next Tuesday 10 February, our elders will join Amelia’s class for swimming. Elders, please bring in your swimming kit. Amelia will also be sending an email reminder.

Warm regards,

Joanna
