Sarah’s Class Week 5 Term 3

Hi Everyone, hope you’ve had a nice weeekend.

For Book week this week, the children started writing stories with a “magical” theme, and are now transferring these stories into their own cardboard BOOK! We had a discussion on Monday about why reading is magic and the importance around developing the ability to read. We completed recording the changes we saw to the Naked Eggs and abandoned the eggs and their membrane into the compost. We had the last of our sessions with Nate and learning the basics of how to DJ. He taught the children about reading the audience, making & adding ‘scratching’ sounds and other different sound effects to any chosen piece of music.

On Tuesday, we got back on the court to play Pickleball and we read a story book and wrote a book review. For Wednesday, James said they focussed on changes of states of matter and how adding and removing heat affects their properties. The group were given a cut and paste activity to complete at the end, for consolidation. In Maths – they compared lengths of different objects and converted cm to mm. He spoke to them about the common misconception that a bigger number means an object is longer eg 1000 mm is the same as 1m, not longer. The other half of the lesson focussed on measures of a turn (a quarter turn / 90 degrees + clockwise / anti-clockwise… where am I facing now? etc). He said the group all seemed to grasp this but needed a little more practice “so we played an online quiz game to end.” We did some more coding on Thursday, and the children were given a criteria of making a dance sequence. The more computer adept children helped support other children, so there was a lovely dynamic of peer teaching going on. Then they all shared what they had coded in that given time.

We had a good chat in our class meeting about ‘whispering’ in front of other people and the children all agreed that unless it was a ‘whispering’ game this could be percieved as being an unkind and/or rude thing to do. Also, one child brought the term ‘roasting’ up and said that it’s not okay to make a joke about how someone else looks, as it could be hurtful. The group agreed this was something which was being bantered around the playground and it should be brought up at school meeting.

Skateboards and scooters are all the rage at the moment, so we are continuing to remind each other of the rules and how we need to keep ourselves and others safe while ‘on wheels’, around the school.

Thats it for another week folks!

Love, Sarah
