Sarah’s Class: Term 3 Week 7

Dear Parents,

More immersion into the Ancient Civilisations this week saw us hone in more closely to 2 of the 3 civilisations we are looking at: The Mayas and Incas. We looked at and discovered their social pyramid of hierarchy and that art, writing, and masks for the Mayans were very prolific. The children all decided they would make their own mask and recreate a mask for either an event or death. The majority chose an event which was mostly animal masks depicted. We discovered that the Mayas invented their own system of writing and were skilled astronomers and mathematicians.

The Incas, on the other hand, used string and knots to record data and information and were highly skilled farmers. Speaking of DATA, for maths this week the children discovered the different types of graphs which can be used to record information. A number of surveys were conducted in the class and tally marks transferred to bar and column graphs also dot and plot points.

Jump Rope for Heart was a blast on Tuesday which got everyone out in the playground – skipping!! Children exceeded the intended target for money to be raised which was super exciting. Wear it Purple day raised some money through Meg’s class bake sale and there was a gorgeous array of colours sitting at our school meeting.

Next week, on Thursday, 10th at 9:30 AM we start our first session of project presentations. This day will be my last day before I go on leave for the final 2 weeks of term. I have decided to take Friday, 11th off as well, so the lovely Sarah D will start her days on this day with the group.

Hope you have a great week ahead!
Love, Sarah
