Sarah’s Class: Term 2 Week 9

We worked on combining and separating shapes in maths. The students made some pictures using different shapes on Monday and then on Tuesday they worked in groups to see how many different ways they could make a hexagon – firstly a regular hexagon then irregular ones.

We also watched a couple of episodes of the ‘My Place’ series and read some of the book. Then we started making our own maps and stories about our own place.

Sarah’s class has been studying Nadia Wheatley’s classic Australian picturebook, ‘My Place’. This rich text integrates history and geography by encouraging us to consider our local environment, past and present. The children drew maps of their homes and surroundings and wrote short biographical texts about themselves and their community. This was supplemented by watching episodes of the My Place TV series which prompted us to consider the lives of children during Australia’s early colonial era.

In maths, we started to look at the concept of area and how to use centimetres squared as a unit of measurement. The children sketched the letters of their names on grid paper and calculated the area covered by them.
