Sarah’s Class: Term 2 Week 4

Dear Parents,

I hope you’ve had a nice weekend.

We’ve had another busy week looking more deeply into our topic. This week we read and listened to a few stories about the Dreaming. “Our Dreaming” written by Kirli Saunders and “Come Together” written by Isaiah Firebrace each providing an insight into what the Dreaming is in the Aboriginal worldview: everything starts and ends with Country. Certain designs and stories come from the Dreaming and are based on the experience of living and being on Country. After gaining this understanding we recorded a list of Native Fauna and Flora and talked about messages, teachings
and morals of stories. We read a few Dreamtime stories and watched a short animation called “The Waddalak Sisters” through Dust Echoes on ABC iview.

The children then began developing their own ideas about a Dreaming story and started generating thoughts, starting with a Mind Map. They then transferred this into a story and will edit, re-write and illustrate one. We continued with our Soundwaves unit and pages in our Maths textbook covering more Multiplication and Division strategies. This coming week we will be moving on to look at fractions and decimals.

We were so lucky with the weather on Tuesday to be able to squeeze our basketball session in with Michael. The rain cleared in the afternoon for us to practice dribbling, passing, bouncing and throwing balls. We played a couple of relay games and finished up with a pretty serious, competitive game of basketball at the end.

Next week on Thursday, we are off to the city for The Writers Festival with Meg and Jess’ classes. This will be a whole day excursion with the buses picking us up at school at 9:00 AM SHARP. We need to arrive at Sydney Town Hall by 9:30 AM for the festival. Children will need their morning tea, lunch, appropriate footwear, water bottle and can bring between $15 – $25 to purchase a book of their choosing at the end.
