Preschool News: Week 4 Term 3
Hello everyone,
This week in preschool our learning has continued to soar both in the skies and here on the ground.
Our astronomy project has been a highlight as we explored the fascinating process of how planets are formed. We learned how the sun was created in our solar system leaving just enough leftover energy gas and dust to form the planets we know today. The children enjoyed discussing and drawing the four rocky planets Mercury Venus Earth and Mars as well as the gas supergiants Jupiter Saturn Uranus and Neptune. These scientific concepts have been brought to life through stories vocabulary exploration and creative journal reflections.
Serena our student teacher has been running some engaging lessons about rainbow lorikeets. This week she led tours around the school grounds to spot lorikeets and discover the plants and flowers they rely on for food. The children were excited to see how many foraging opportunities already exist in our own environment and to connect this learning with our ongoing work on respecting wildlife.
Chris was back again on Tuesday providing preschool children with the wonderful opportunity to design and create something using the sewing machine which was very well received.
Wednesday saw us heading off to Lane Cove Library where we enjoyed a wonderful selection of stories and the chance to borrow books to bring back to preschool. As always, these visits help us foster a love of reading and connect with our local community spaces.
We also celebrated Science Week with a combination of our astronomy learning and a special CSIRO virtual experience. Author Mark Greenwood shared his book Lucky Star telling the story of a meteorite that fell to Earth in Victoria in 1969. His passion for rocks and meteorites inspired many curious questions from the children.
Looking ahead we are hoping to visit Kimberley Playground on Monday weather permitting. It will be another great opportunity to get out into our local community enjoy some outdoor play and put our gross motor skills to work.
Next week is Book Week and preschool children will have the opportunity to engage in book reading within the primary area each morning at 9.15. It would be great if everyone could arrive as early as possible so those who are interested can join primary for this experience.
It has been a week filled with curiosity discovery and joy which is the perfect combination for deep and meaningful learning in preschool.
