Preschool News: Week 2 Term 4
Hello everyone,
We’ve had a lovely week in preschool, both weather wise and event wise. The children have embraced the mix of hot and cooler days, enjoying time outdoors and engaging deeply in their play and learning indoors.
Throughout the week, we’ve been embracing our democratic principles, in regard to venturing out and about in the wider Lane Cove community. On Monday we voted on whether to go to Kimberley playground for the morning and on Wednesday, when it was forecasted to be a very warm day. On both occasions the majority voted to stay at school, so we did. On Friday the children voted on staying in preschool rather than attending school meeting, a wonderful reflection of our democratic philosophy in action.
Outdoors, there was a great mix of energetic play and creative exploration. The sandpit and ramp areas were buzzing with activity, while the mud kitchen remained a busy hub filled with imaginative water play. Monday and Wednesday were particularly warm, so we brought out the hose for those who wanted a cool shower, which was a big hit. There’s also been many games of chasing, long jump into the sandpit, and alfresco rounds of Spot It.
Throughout the week, we continued our focus on Protective Behaviours, supported by the Safe Series from the Office of the Children’s Guardian. The children explored stories such as My Undies Rule, learning about body safety, private parts, and how to seek help from trusted adults. These conversations were handled with care and respect, helping children understand personal boundaries and what to do if they ever feel unsafe.
Concert preparations are now well underway, bringing a wonderful sense of excitement and teamwork. The children are becoming more confident with the movements, and it has been lovely to see them supporting each other as they practise together on the semicircle of the basketball court.
Indoors, children’s creativity has been flowing. Bookmaking and collaborative storytelling were popular, with children taking turns as authors and illustrators. The playdough table was a hive of activity with our new hairdressing set, where children created play dough characters with growing hair that could be trimmed and styled again and again. Cubby building was another highlight, transforming the book corner, drawing area, and main floor into cosy hideaways for imaginative play.
A big thank you to all the families who have replied to my emails about next year, whether your child is returning to preschool in 2026 or heading off to primary school at Currambena or elsewhere. Regardless of this, all children making their transition to school need to complete the consent form. I am still waiting on a number of these to be returned. Without the consent form, I am unable to begin writing your child’s digital Transition to School Statement, as this is completed through the Department of Education portal and cannot progress until consent is provided. It’s part of the funding agreement that our preschool has with the Department of Education and linked to the funding each family receives through fee relief in preschool.
