Preschool News: Term 3 Week 3

Hello everyone,

This week in preschool, our ongoing interest in fire continued through discussions, practical experiences and safety learning.

The children revisited the three things a fire needs: heat, fuel and oxygen. We also talked about safe clothing, tying back long hair, wearing shoes, moving slowly around the fire and keeping a safe distance. The children remembered important emergency messages,
including “stop, drop, cover and roll” and “get down low and go, go, go.” These conversations have been thoughtful and practical, with the children sharing what they already know and asking plenty of questions. We are hoping to arrange a visit from the local fire brigade to extend this learning further.

Numbers also remained a strong interest. This week, we explored the ideas of finite and infinite. Using number cards, arrows and the infinity symbol, we discussed things that have an ending and things that might continue forever. This led to conversations about very large numbers, space, time and whether there could ever be a final number. The children enjoyed sharing their theories and responding to each other’s ideas.

There was also plenty of dramatic and collaborative play throughout the week. The home corner was used for cooking, family play, caring for babies and creating long storylines that continued over time. Octonauts remained popular, with children drawing on familiar characters, stories and music in their play. The Plus-Plus pieces were used to make fidget toys and a range of small constructions.

Beyblades also attracted a lot of interest. Some children learnt by watching their peers before attempting to connect the pieces and use the launchers themselves. This required concentration, fine motor control and persistence, particularly when the parts did not fit together easily at first.

Outside, the basketball court was busy with bikes and scooters, while the mud kitchen continued to support cooking, sensory play and imaginative ideas.

We finished the week with our whole-school Soup Day. Preschool joined the rest of the school for this community event and contributed cheese bread and pizza bread to share.

It was a lovely opportunity for the children to take part in preparing food, contribute to a wider school event and spend time together as a community.

Thank you to Valentina for her generous donation of toys, clothing and gym mats. Thank you also to Anja & Yulia from the Axolotls for donating the Duplo. The children have loved exploring the new pieces and incorporating them into their play.

A reminder to arrive as close of possible to 9am to enable everyone as much time as possible to get ready to head off to the park on Monday.
