Preschool News: Term 2 Week 6

Hello everyone,

It has been another busy week in preschool, with a focus on community, routine excursions, Reconciliation Week and most importantly play.

This week we welcomed Maya, who joined us for her Year 10 work experience placement from Mosman High School. Maya was once a preschool child at Currambena and continued through the school until Year 6. It has been great to have her back in the preschool in a different role. She has been helpful, calm and engaged, and the children have enjoyed getting to know her throughout the week.

We have also been learning about Reconciliation Week and Sorry Day. Through stories, conversations and creative experiences, we have been introducing and revisiting ideas about First Nations peoples, Country, symbols, storytelling and history in age-appropriate ways. These experiences are part of our ongoing commitment to respectfully embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives in the preschool program.

On Wednesday, we had our first routine excursion to Lane Cove Library for the year. The walk itself was an important part of the experience. Children practised staying with the group, listening to directions, crossing roads safely and moving together as a walking bus of educators and children. Some children needed additional support with this, and we will continue to practise these skills as the year progresses. At the library, the children
listened to stories, explored the children’s section and had the opportunity to borrow books.

We are also hoping to begin regular Monday visits to Kimberly Playground. Before this can happen, we still need some routine excursion permission forms returned for children in their second year of preschool. Once these are received, we will be able to begin planning these visits.

The invisibility masks made in the craft room on Thursday were a highlight and led to a lot of imaginative play back at preschool. Music was also enjoyed by many children, and our Friday picnic gave children another opportunity to join in with the wider Currambena community.

As always, children’s safety, rights and wellbeing remain the paramount consideration in our decisions and planning.
