Preschool News: Term 1 Week 5
Hello everyone,
This week in preschool we have continued our exploration of space, building on children’s existing knowledge about the universe. Our astronomy learning has progressed from nebulae to molecular clouds, sometimes called stellar nurseries, where new stars are formed. We explored nuclear fusion and how our sun was created, and how the remaining gas and dust formed the planets in our solar system. These complex ideas are shared through discussion, visual demonstrations and collaborative drawing, supporting children to wonder, question and make connections about the world around them.
We have been linking this learning to everyday life by exploring the role of the sun and its energy. This has led to conversations about ultraviolet (UV) radiation and the importance of protecting our skin. Children are learning why wearing hats, applying sunscreen and choosing protective clothing helps keep their bodies safe while playing outdoors.
Our discussions have also expanded to consider what our bodies need in order to grow and stay healthy. We have been introducing the idea that the elements found in nature, such as oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur, sodium, chlorine and magnesium, are essential building blocks for life and help our bodies function and thrive. These conversations have sparked thoughtful questions and supported children’s developing understanding of health and wellbeing.
Supporting children’s sense of safety and respect continues to be an important focus. We have introduced a new song about respect and the importance of asking before touching others. While impulsivity is a normal part of early childhood, we are supporting children to slow down, notice others’ boundaries and make safe choices.
Puppet shows and group discussions have provided opportunities to explore problems that can arise in play. Together, we have been practising strategies such as stopping, taking breaths, using words to express feelings, saying “no” or “stop,” and seeking help from a teacher when needed. These shared experiences support children to regulate their emotions and navigate social situations within a group setting.
We continue to observe children closely and provide individual support where needed, ensuring that every child feels safe, supported and confident to participate. It has been encouraging to see children developing self-regulation skills, using language to solve problems and working collaboratively with peers.
Lastly, a huge thank you to everyone who attended last Sunday’s maintenance day. We really appreciate your efforts and time.
That’s a wrap for week 5.
With love,
Katrina, Lisa, Meeta and Lida
