Meg’s Class: Term 3 Week 6

Hi everyone,

What a wonderful way to start the week with the Book Week Parade!

Thank you and well done to everyone who participated. It was wonderful to see so many creative costumes and ideas on display.

On Monday afternoon, as part of our HSIE unit exploring the Australian political system, we launched our class election campaigns. The children were placed into groups and worked together to create political parties, with the goal of winning the election and earning the opportunity to run the class for a morning.

As part of this process, each party developed a set of beliefs and values, as well as at least three policies they would implement if elected. The elected party leaders are currently preparing speeches, which they will present on Monday before our election, where we will also learn about preferential voting. Throughout the week, the children explored campaigning, discussed what makes a campaign effective or ineffective, and applied their understanding of persuasive texts from our Term 1 learning. Following the election, the winning party will need to pass its bills through both the House of Representatives and the Senate before its policies can be put into action.

To continue our Book Week celebrations, we visited Lane Cove Library on Tuesday afternoon for an author talk with Serena Geddes. The children learned about her creative process, particularly her journey from illustrator to both author and illustrator of her own graphic novels.

As we did not have Sport on Tuesday, our Spanish teacher, Carolina, organised for a professional Zumba instructor to visit and teach the children during Spanish time, as Zumba originated in Colombia. Students who are not participating in Spanish this term were also invited to join. I was so pleased to hear how engaged and respectful the group was and how enthusiastically everyone participated.

This week in Maths, we have been investigating measurement and capacity. With the bake sale approaching, we decided there was no better way to learn than by applying these skills in a realworld context. During our Maths lessons, we baked brownies, cakes and cupcakes. The children had a fantastic time measuring ingredients, while another group worked on pricing, calculating costs and deciding on suitable selling prices to make a profit.

Friday was an energetic and exciting day with lots happening across the school. Well done to Grace, who took the lead in organising Wear It Purple Day. Thank you to everyone who showed their support by wearing purple and rainbow colours. The bake sale was a huge success, and the funds raised will be donated to the Wear It Purple organisation to support LGBTQIA+ youth.

To finish the day, children from across the school came together for a purple dance party on the handball court. A special thank you to Sarah M for her support in helping Grace organise this part of the event.
