Meg’s Class: Term 3 Week 2

Hi everyone,

This week we launched our big focus topic for the term, From Past to Parliament. We began by exploring why societies and communities have rules. Students worked in groups to create their own colonies, developing rules that reflected the needs and values of their communities. They then experienced the process of federation by negotiating with other colonies to draft a shared constitution before voting on the final version. This provided a fantastic introduction to our unit and laid the foundations for our learning as we begin exploring Australia’s Parliament in more depth this week, in preparation for our Camp Canberra trip.

In Mathematics, we have begun investigating 3D shapes, focusing on how they can be represented in different 2D forms, including nets and different viewpoints.

In English, we introduced a new weekly writing routine. Through this, students will practise analysing and responding to questions similar to those they are likely to encounter in high school. It will also provide opportunities for them to reflect on and apply their previous learning in a structured way.

Sports choices began this week, and it sounds like everyone had a wonderful time! A friendly reminder to please ensure your child brings a hat and drink bottle and wears appropriate clothing and enclosed shoes each Tuesday so they can participate safely and comfortably.

A reminder that this Friday, 7 August, we have our Year 6/7 Night. Please arrive by 6:00 pm and bring a plate of food to share. As mentioned previously, despite the name, this event is not limited to Year 6 families, everyone is warmly welcome to attend!

There is now only a week and a half until we head off to Camp Canberra! I have emailed the camp information and packing list, so please check that your child has everything they need. As Canberra can be very cold at this time of year, please ensure plenty of warm clothing is packed. Students will also need neat, respectful attire for our visit to Parliament House.

Finally, Semester 1 school records will be sent home next week, with parent–teacher meetings beginning in Week 5. I will send out the booking schedule shortly so you can choose a suitable time.
