Meg’s Class: Term 1 Week 3

Hi everyone,

Firstly, a huge thank you to everyone who attended the Parent Information Evening. I really appreciated your feedback and support, and I’m very excited about the upcoming year!

This week, we placed a strong focus on constructing effective arguments. We discussed the importance of justification, explaining and elaborating on your point rather than simply stating an opinion. We introduced “The Takes Line,” where one end of the spectrum represents 100% agree and the other 100% disagree. Students respond to different statements by positioning themselves along the line according to their view. Importantly, they must also be prepared to explain their reasoning and make their case. This activity has sparked many thoughtful discussions and brought forward a wide range of perspectives and ideas.

In sport, we had our first visit to the pool. We introduced eggbeater (a form of treading water commonly used in water polo) and had lots of fun experimenting with creating whirlpools.

During our class meeting, the children voted to bring back Afternoon Tea. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, students will take turns bringing in a snack to share with the class at the end of the day. This coming week, Alana (Tuesday), Grace (Wednesday), and Ayaan (Thursday) have volunteered to provide a snack for the group.

Friday is always a special day at Currambena, with the lively rush to finish work in time for the shops, ice blocks, and Free Friday. This week, our class hosted a wedding, witnessed by almost the entire school! There were last-minute raids on the dress-up boxes to “find the perfect outfit,” along with dramatic objections during the ceremony. The happy couple have since inspired several other students, who are now eagerly promenading around the school in search of a suitable match for the next celebration.

In the afternoon, there were re-enactments of the Trojan War using base ten blocks and chess pieces. What began as a historical retelling quickly (and very creatively!) transformed into a dystopian sci-fi epic, complete with drones and futuristic technology. I’m so excited to continue uncovering and celebrating the wonderful quirks of this group.
