Jess’ Class Week 5 Term 2
Dear Parents,
This week, we continued working on narrative writing in English. The children are learning how to structure a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. They’re also focusing on planning their writing in advance, so they have a roadmap for how their story will unfold. While these are important guidelines, of course, creative and imaginative authors often break them. Still, it’s valuable for the children to understand the structure before they decide to break the rules!
In maths we’ve continued exploring arrays and have been working with word problems to bring multiplication into the real world. We’ve also begun to explore and memorise the 4 times tables. Memorising times tables is a useful skill to have particularly when more complicated maths is expected in later years.
In our work about space we’ve learned about comets, asteroids and meteoroids which led us to a very interesting conversation about the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. The children designed their own planet protection device and made craters like those on the moon with trays of flour and marbles. The children’s work on creating a model of the solar system is continuing at various speeds but I’m certain everyone will have something to display by the end of the term.
Happy weekend!
Jess
Dear Parents,
On Thursday this week, we walked up to The Canopy for the Voices for Reconciliation event. It was wonderful to see the various schools’ performances, however the highlight was, of course, the Currambena performances. Before our walk to The Canopy, we briefly discussed Reconciliation Week and how it is so much more than saying “sorry”. The theme this year, Bridging Now to Next, reflects the ongoing connection between past, present and future, and calls on all Australians to step forward together, to look ahead and continue the push forward as past lessons guide us.
In Maths, we continued our 2D shapes topic with combining and splitting shapes and tessellations. The children concluded this activity with some beautiful creations using Magna-Tiles
