Jess and Susan’s Class: Term 3 Week 9

Dear parents,

The first part of this week brought the culmination of our mini-science unit and an excursion to HydGene Renewables laboratory. The children loved the experience of seeing scientists at work and were excited by the connections to concepts we have been discussing in class, including types of matter and running fair tests. The discussions about sublimation and the demonstrations with the dry ice were particularly engaging. Thank you to Peter for welcoming us into your lab and being so generous with your time.

We also had Summerhill day this week with a range of both teacher and student led activities. Some highlights included healthy crepe making with Aidan, cardboard cubby building with Joanna, a local bushland cleanup with Susan and scrunchie making with Lucia.

Friday was a busy day with many children finishing their poems and polishing their PIP presentations in time for Tuesday.

Next week, we’ll be engaging in a mini unit of work called the Body Machine and we will learn about the skeletal and muscular systems and how they work together. I also plan to cover some early concepts related to changing bodies. This will include naming private parts and discussing the ways bodies change throughout puberty. There will be an anonymous question box and any questions will be answered honestly using anatomically correct terms. If you have any questions about this please let me know. I imagine this area of learning will continue into term 4.

And…finally… we have the first set of back legs on some of your tadpoles! (Maybe it’s the warmer weather).

I hope you’ve all enjoyed the weekend.

Jess and Susan
