Jess and Susan’s Class: Term 3 Week 5
Dear parents,
Wow – what a fabulous week! On Tuesday, we celebrated Science Week across the whole school with activities involving construction with paper, cups, straws and rubber bands, as well as exploring concepts of flight and propulsion. By all accounts, it was a fantastic morning!
After lunch, Anthony (Aidan’s Dad) came in to run two very engaging experiments with the class. The first involved students preparing a copper sulfate solution and cleaning an iron nail before placing it into the solution. After approximately 10 minutes, they observed a coating of copper forming on the iron nail, along with a change in the colour of the solution. For the second experiment, the children prepared a potassium permanganate solution and a separate solution of sugar and sodium hydroxide. They then combined the two solutions and observed a series of striking colour changes as the reaction took place. These experiments provided a fun and engaging way for students to explore chemical reactions. A huge thank you to Anthony for your time, energy and enthusiasm – the kids loved it!
From Wednesday to Friday, the entire school was wrapped up in Art Week. Digital stop-motion movie-making, Procreate, Greenscreen, charcoal animation and zine-making were on offer. A huge thank you to Chris for organising the week, and to the artists who came in to help: Siobhan, Cale, Ryan and Jackie and Neil. I hope to see you all in Newtown this coming Sunday for the exhibition of all the children’s work.
In other news, Frida has asked the class to support her in raising money for the victims of the recent Colombian earthquake. She explained her connection to the country and the devastation that people are experiencing. The class were very empathetic and supportive and have organised a bake sale for lunchtime next Wednesday, 26th August. It would be wonderful if everyone could donate baked goods for the stall and bring them in on Wednesday morning. And please remember – no nuts!
Next week will also be Book Week, with a variety of activities planned, including a costume parade on Monday morning and an author visit at Lane Cove Library on Tuesday. For extra fun, the children will also be learning a variety of Spanish dances on Wednesday, which will double as their sport for the week.
