Jess and Susan’s Class: Term 3 Week 3

Dear Parents,

We started the week with a fantastic excursion to the Hyde Park Barracks, where the children had the opportunity to experience what life might have been like as a convict. On the way, we visited the statue of Matthew Flinders and his cat, Trim, outside the State Library of NSW, and enjoyed our lunch by the fountain in Hyde Park.

Once inside the Barracks, the children examined objects that had been discovered beneath the floorboards, giving them a fascinating insight into what daily life was like. They also had the chance to lie in hammocks and take part in a work gang, bringing history to life in a memorable way.

As part of our reflection on the excursion, the children practised using paragraphs in their writing to help organise their ideas and move smoothly from one topic to the next. It was wonderful to see so many children embrace this more structured and formal style of writing.

In Mathematics, we have moved from vertical addition to vertical subtraction. Looking at these strategies side by side has helped consolidate the concepts of “trading” and “borrowing” numbers.

Soup Day was a huge success, and I was incredibly proud of the children in our class who suggested the idea, helped with the cooking, assisted with the set-up and serving, and, of course, pitched in with the pack-up afterwards.
