Jess and Susan’s Class: Term 3 Week 2

Dear Parents,

We’re well and truly back into the swing of things, with the children settling in and charging ahead with their learning.

In Maths this week, we’ve been practising vertical addition as another useful strategy to add to our toolkit. The children are becoming increasingly confident at recognising when vertical addition is the best approach and applying the trading (regrouping) system accurately. On Thursday, we investigated perimeter as part of our Maths measurement topic, while our Reading session took us to Mungo and Wollemi National Parks, where we learnt about the importance of caring for these special places. We also settled into our PIPs with children exploring their interests and developing their ideas.

There’s also been plenty of writing! Alongside free-choice writing, the children have been writing from the perspective of a convict in preparation for our excursion to the Hyde Park Barracks on Monday.

We’re also making great progress with our class novel, The Epically Awesome Odyssey – As Told by Nanny Piggins. It’s been a wonderful, age-appropriate way to introduce the story of The Odyssey, especially with the excitement surrounding the new film release.

We also found time to play some literacy games that encourage creative thinking. One activity challenged the children to come up with as many uses as possible for everyday objects, such as a chair or a paper clip—and, as we discovered, there really are no wrong answers!

To round out the week, the children completed reflections on their learning from last term. It’s been so encouraging to read how clearly they can identify what they’re proud of and the areas they’d like to continue improving.
