Jess and Susan’s Class: Term 1 Week 4
Dear Parents,
As part of our What Matters unit, we have explored rhetorical devices that can make our messages more persuasive. To demonstrate this, I showed the children various advertisements that use pathos, ethos and logos to manipulate and persuade. By the end of our discussions, the children were doing a marvellous job at identifying when the advertisements were tugging at our heart strings, appealing to our logic or appearing to be trustworthy (and sometimes all three at once!). After our discussions, the children did a fantastic job of creating comic strip advertisements to demonstrate the use of these
strategies. Hopefully some of this comes home, and the children begin to view the media they consume with an increasingly critical eye.
In maths, we’ve continued with place value and have been considering the meaning of the equals sign, balancing equations and associative thinking. We’ve also begun to learn and practice our five times tables under a bit of timed pressure, and the children have delighted in seeing their speed improve with practice.
During playtime, the children have shown sustained interest in paper airplane making, along with drawing and creating models with plasticine. Monopoly has also been a new addition for a small group, and some children set up a pop-up “tattoo stall,” where they designed and applied pretend tattoos using textas and sticky tape.
Warm Wishes,
Jess and Susan
