Faith’s Class: Term 2 Week 9
Happy Week 9!
It’s hard to believe we are already nearing the end of the term. The Chatterboxes have continued to work hard and have enjoyed bringing together many of the concepts we have explored throughout the term.
In Maths, we continued our exploration of time, focusing on telling o’clock and half-past times on an analogue clock. We discussed the importance of the minute hand in helping us work out how far through the hour we are, and how the hour hand gradually moves between numbers rather than jumping from one hour to the next. Next week, we will be creating our own sundials as part of our learning in both Maths and ‘Bright Lights, Big Sounds’, exploring how shadows can help us tell the time. This week we each created a number marker for our sundial, so we are all hoping for some sunshine next week!
Our tennis program is almost at an end and next week is our final session. The Chatterboxes have continued to develop their skills and confidence on the court. They gave everything a good go and have shown lots of perseverance as the term begins to wind down.
In English, we continued exploring poetry through texts from Yawuru Country. The Chatterboxes particularly enjoyed learning about Walga Walga (The Red Dress Woman) and Gumbun (The Mangrove Man). We discussed the different perspectives presented in the poems and considered why these stories may have been shared. The Chatterboxes then compared these poems with the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, identifying how both poems and myths can act as cautionary tales that entertain while also teaching important lessons about courage, kindness and making safe choices. We have now begun co-creating our own class narrative that brings together much of our learning from this term. We are hoping to transform our story into a shadow-box performance that incorporates our understanding of light and sound.
Our Elders are in the final edits and rehearsals of their PIPs and are preparing for their presentations in Week 11. Keep an eye out for an email on Monday with further details regarding presentation dates and times.
In our Conflict Resolution unit, we revisited and expanded on many of the concepts we have explored throughout the term. Through lessons and role-play activities, we reviewed our early warning signs and discussed situations where they might experience these feelings. We practised using assertive language to hold our personal boundaries in a variety of scenarios involving friends, classmates, siblings and group situations. The Chatterboxes approached these discussions with great thoughtfulness and maturity. It has been wonderful to see their growing confidence in recognising their feelings, listening to their bodies and communicating their needs respectfully. Developing healthy boundaries is a lifelong skill, and they have made a fantastic start on that journey.
Our class chaired the School Meeting this Friday and our chairpeople, Leonardo and Reuben, did an excellent job. It had a lot of important topics that many people were passionate about and they did a great job of ensuring all voices were heard and kept the meeting running smoothly.
As we approach the end of term, just a friendly reminder that children should be collected either from the front of the classroom or from TBU at pick-up time. Students in the younger years are not permitted to leave through the front gate without an adult or older sibling. We also ask families to please take care when using the gate and only open it for their own entry or exit, rather than holding it open for extended periods.
