Faith’s Class: Term 2 Week 5
Well it’s been a rainy week for us but we made the most of it!
On Monday, we enjoyed a visit to the library with the Axolotl class. It was a very relaxing afternoon for the Chatterboxes and everyone enjoyed being able to take their time choosing books and finding comfortable nooks to read in.
We had a short break from the rain on Tuesday, which meant we could head outside for our basketball sports session. Everyone got involved and we had a great time practicing our throwing and catching, dribbling and shooting skills.
On Wednesday, the Chatterboxes eagerly supported the Axolotls’ bake sale and enjoyed some delicious treats. We also said goodbye to Stevie. The class made sure her final day was a special one and she will certainly be missed. We hope to see her back for a visit soon!
Literacy stations are now in full swing, and the Chatterboxes have settled beautifully into the routine and reading confidence continues to grow across all groups. In writing, we have been exploring “Sizzling Starters,” using engaging sentence prompts to create short imaginative stories that have been very fun to read. Other groups have focused on our Golden Words, building confidence with spelling through creative activities while also developing handwriting skills and correct line placement.
In Maths, we are wrapping up our exploration of whole numbers. We investigated 100s and 200s charts and enjoyed playing “Splat,” an online clue-based number game that challenged them to apply their understanding of whole numbers. We then extended our learning to counting on and off the decade up to 100, while our Elders challenged themselves further by working with numbers up to 1000.
Our “Bright Lights, Big Sounds” unit has concluded its sound focus with a summative task that explored pitch, volume and soundwaves. We categorised sounds made by Indigenous and Ancient Greek instruments and compared them with sounds they could create themselves, including whistling, sharpening pencils and even “awhooing”! Towards the end of the week, we were introduced to other forms of energy, such as light and
heat, and completed an energy hunt around the classroom to identify items that produce different types of energy. Please come and check out our classroom displays! Next week, we will begin exploring light energy in more detail.
Our Elders continue to work hard on their PIPs and are making excellent progress. They are becoming increasingly confident researchers and are practising how to summarise information and identify trusted sources. Meanwhile, our Juniors have been focusing on explicit literacy skills, particularly understanding when to correctly use upper and lower case letters.
Our Conflict Resolution unit also continued this week. We revisited our classroom rights and responsibilities and reflected on how these connect to friendships. We also explored the idea of power by discussing who we think are powerful people and what makes them powerful. Next week, we will build on this learning by examining how we use power within friendships and the responsibility we have to use it positively.
Next Tuesday we will have our Wingaru excursion to Tambourine Bay (please keep an eye out on your emails, this wet weather may mean we have to have an incursion at school). I have one parent volunteer already but if anyone else has some free time that day we would love for you to join us! Thursday morning our class will be going to the Voices for Reconciliation event at The Canopy, we have a few students from our class singing. Thank you to all the parents who volunteered for the day, fingers crossed for clear skies.
