Faith’s Class: Term 1 Week 8
Hi everyone!!
It’s been a big and joyful week for the Cheepy Birds! With Amelia away, I had the pleasure of teaching the class all week, and we had such a great time together. On Tuesday, we visited the Art Gallery of NSW to see Art Express, connecting to our “What Matters?” unit. Students explored meaningful themes in HSC artworks and enjoyed the playful installation The Key’s Under the Mat, which encouraged adventurous climbing and movement.
Wednesday was Summerhill Day, and students enthusiastically joined a range of activities. Many took part in cooking, baking cookies or making rice paper rolls, while others enjoyed creative crafts like leaf animals and working on their “What Matters?” projects. Some Cheepy Birds even ran their own sessions, June and Hazel’s colouring activity and Oli’s dodgeball and capture the flag were big hits!
As the term wraps up, our Elders have begun rehearsing their PIPs, focusing on voice projection and presentation flow. Meanwhile, Juniors explored how penguins stay dry using a fun wax-and-water experiment.
On Thursday, Benji led a thoughtful and engaging session on World Down Syndrome Day. After reading Jana’s Brightly Coloured Socks, he spoke about how everyone develops differently and how we play can look different. Students were highly engaged, asking insightful and respectful questions. The class then created their own brightly coloured sock artworks using collage materials and each one unique and a vibrant reflection of individuality (come check them out in the classroom).
Friday’s celebrations continued this important learning. Benji spoke at School Meeting, explaining what Down Syndrome is and helping students better understand and appreciate differences. It was great to see how thoughtfully students from across the school asked questions. We then enjoyed a whole-school sock parade. It was so cool to see so many colourful socks on proud display. The day also included fun activities like sock wrestling, which brought lots of laughter and teamwork. It was especially inspiring to see the Cheepy Birds supporting something so meaningful to their peer.
