Amelia’s Class Week 8 Term 3

Hi everyone,

A busy, but wonderful week this week! One of our key highlights of the week, was of course Summerhill Day on the Wednesday. Despite the rain, the children had a fabulous time engaging in a wide range of activities, particularly a number put on and lead by the children themselves. The kids put on scrunchy making, creating your own civilisation, capture the flag, chocolate milk, dancing, beyblades, handball and quizzes. It was a joyous day as always, and so wonderful to see the mixed age play and shared love of creativity and creation.

On Tuesday in my absence, Nate did a basketball session for the group, which sounded fabulous! The children reported a lot of enjoyment and loved challenging their abilities.  Thank you Nate, I am sure we will have you back again!

We are slowly coming to the end of our unit on Natural Disasters, and have looked closely at a number of beautiful books by Jackie French, including ‘Fire’, ‘Earthquake’, and ‘Drought’. We read through ‘Fire’ again, and picked out language that made the fire seem like a real living beast using personification. The children had to write their own sentences bringing life to fire and I was thoroughly impressed by their creativity! We have also created some artworks based on ‘Fire’ and ‘Drought’ that are hung around the classroom, so please come in and have a look!

For the remainder of the term, the children will be creating a presentation in groups based on one chosen disaster that we have learnt about. They have to present a ‘survival kit’ to prepare and stay safe in the case of disaster. They can choose how they present this, such as through a video format such as a news report, through plasticine constructions, through a written report or procedure, through a dramatic performance, or with drawings or artworks. We will spend a few lessons putting these survival kits together before they present them in the final week of term.

Our class is going to the Lane Cove Library next Monday, so please pack all returns!
