Amelia’s Class Week 5 Term 3
Hi all,
It was lovely to see so many of you for the book parade and some of the incredibly creative and fun costumes that the children showed off for Book Week.
For Book Week, we wrote about Charlie Bucket who is the protagonist in ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ by Roald Dahl. We discussed what it means to write a character study and explored the different parts of Charlie’s life that influence his personality such as his family dynamic living with all four grandparents, sharing a small house with 7 people, his father losing his job, and constantly being underfed due to the family’s minimal income. We made connections between these factors and significant parts of his personality such as his shyness, his generosity and selflessness, his curiosity and eagerness to learn, and his kindness to others.
We also introduced a strategy to add larger numbers together called the ‘Split Strategy’. This involved breaking up our numbers into their components of hundreds, tens and ones and adding these together first. E.g. To add 28 to 31, we split 28 into 20 and 8 and split 31 into 30 and 1. We then add our tens together, 20+30=50, then add our ones together, 8+1=9. After this step, we add our sums together, 50+9=59! We will continue to explore this strategy and use it with subtraction, but it is one of many strategies the children will start to learn and apply.
Next week, we will look at ‘I statements’ to help us express our needs during conflicts.
