Amelia’s class week 4 term 1

Hi everyone,

This week we started our next maths unit looking at everything related to position and direction. We started by directing a friend from one location in the playground to another. We practiced using the words left, right, forward, backwards, continue and stop. The children reflected on having trouble remembering their lefts and rights and the difficulty in giving directions that were accurate and easy to understand. We also explored coordinates on a grid map and the children created their own grid maps of a chosen location, such as a treasure island, their bedroom, their neighbourhood or even the Currambena grounds. Next week we will use these maps to direct a friend between locations and identify the coordinates of key features.

While our elders were working on their PIPs with Archana, the juniors, now known as ‘The Dolphins’ continued to learn about the ocean. This week, we read the beautiful book ‘The Rainbow Fish’ and created our own glittery and colourful watercolour artworks of a rainbow fish. The children used glitter paint to create the effect of iridescent scales. It was lovely to see how engaged the children were with the book and its message on internal beauty and pride in oneself, and to see this reflected in the time they spent on their rainbow fish art.
