Amelia’s Class – Term 2 – Week 7
Hi everyone,
I hope you all had a nice break over the long weekend. The children seem well-rested for the next few weeks ahead.
A few of our highlights this week included learning about 2D shapes by using Tangrams, Summerhill Day, and our unit of work ‘All Around the World’ with Jess’ group.
A lot of the children have never used or even heard of Tangrams before but they are an excellent way to learn about and engage with 2D shapes, and see how they can tessellate and fit together. As we discovered, it is surprisingly difficult to fit these shapes together to create a larger shape, such as a square. It took some practice to understand that we may need to rotate our shapes in different directions to align their edges. A big congratulations to Oscar and Ezra who solved the square puzzle first! They were very diligent with trying a range of rotations and positions to solve the task.
Summerhill Day was lovely as always, with a range of activities to suit all age groups, facilitating multi-age play and a lovely energy felt around the whole school!
With Susan on Thursday afternoon, our two classes learnt about desserts and sweets around the world. We spoke about what a dessert actually is, how they vary in different countries and we learnt about some traditional or national desserts. The children then created their own desserts using plasticine. Susan and I were so impressed with the children’s creativity and the challenge of inventing a new dessert. Some of these creations included frosted pavlova, flurrolucia (inspired by churros), marshmallow moon cake, chocolate marsh cream, fruity delight, groulloup cake, and many more!
