Amelia’s Class: Term 1 Week 5

Hi everyone,

This officially marks halfway through Term 1. Where has the time gone!

This week the children were incredibly engaged with our What Matters focus. We began the week by watching and engaging with a range of advertisements both in video or poster form. The group obviously enjoyed watching Mr Bean scale across rooftops and needing a ‘Snickers’ to feel like his actual ninja-self again, but also connected deeply with some of the ads bred from safety or sustainability campaigns such as SunSmart, Beat Plastic Pollution, and World Water Day.

We discussed the use of sound and imagery to engage particular audiences or to impress a particular feeling while viewing, and focused heavily on the use of language to draw you in. We looked at the use of commands in ads to make you feel like you have no choice but to buy the product or do the thing! On our walk to the pool on Tuesday, the children couldn’t help but notice the advertisements we would usually walk past without a second glance, at bus stops, on buses, at store fronts and even outside the school gates.

Another big highlight of the week was some lovely tea-making happening during morning tea and lunchtime. Reuben brought in some loose tea leaves and slowly built up a tea-making stand on the handball court. A number of children in the class started to join in, and of course Meg and I had to give it a taste! It was lovely to see this child-led play in our class group!

Just a reminder, no swimming next Tuesday.
