Amelia’s Class Term 1 Week 2

Hi everyone,

What a wonderful start to the new year we have had!

The children voted for our class name for the term to be the ‘Cheepy Birds’. I am not sure exactly where that has come from, but it is here to stay.

We drew and painted some beautiful self-portraits using oil pastels and watercolours. They are hung up outside our classroom so please come by and try to spot your child!

For our unit ‘What Matters’, we read the story ‘Here We Are’ by Oliver Teffers, which is a beautiful book sparking interest and pride in our home planet Earth, and all of the unique features and living beings we are surrounded by. We had a fantastic discussion after reading about what the children view as important to them, to their communities, or to the world. Some of the key ideas that were shared included:

  • The importance of living things
  • Caring for the environment and reducing pollution
  • Relationships and connection
  • Emotions or feelings to feel a sense of belonging
  • Learning and having access to school
  • Rights and responsibilities: The right to be respected, to have access to water, food,
    and safety (shelter), and the responsibility to care for others and share our planet
  • Family and community

If you would like to see all of our brainstormed ideas, they are hung-up on the wall in the classroom. Surrounding it are ‘All About Me’ fish that the children filled in depicting some of the things that are important to them such as family and friendships, games and play, and pets and animals.

With Sarah D, the children also created silhouettes filled with images, symbols, words, or icons of significant things. These fantastic artworks will be part of our ‘What Matters’ festival at the end of the term.

Next week, we will have our first swimming session on Tuesday the 10th of February. We already have a large number of volunteers, so thank you to those people that will be joining us! I have sent out an email with some general reminders about our swimming sessions and what the children will need.

I am looking forward to delving deeper into our routines with the children, and getting stuck into our learning. I will speak more about these routines and plans for learning at our Parent Information Evening this coming Thursday the 12th at 6pm. I hope to see all of you there!
