Julianna Term 3 Week 10

Hello Everyone,WOW!!! What a great concert last night. Congratulations to all performers, producers, stagehands and the teachers who put in hours of preparation with our young stars.

FRIDAY SOCIAL
Please remember we have our end of term social on Friday starting around 6pm.
Can each family bring a dish or two, enough to feed your family and a couple of extras.
Payman is coordinating the evening so if you can give her a hand either to set-up around 5.30pm or tidy up at the end of the evening this will also make it an enjoyable evening for her too.
MAINTENANCE HOURS
Have you written your hours in the book???
I will be doing the tally on Thursday morning. Meanwhile the school needs another good sweeping with all the leaves that have fallen.
Olivia is shifting her room so any help you can give with the move would go to your maintenance hours. Please coordinate with Olivia.

ACCOMODATION WANTED
We have two students Luuk and Willem from the Netherlands studying Sports and Development at the Hanze University in Groningen who are coming to work in Currambena from February till around August 2009. It is there final year of study.
They have asked if there is any possibility of accommodation close to Currambena that is not so expensive.
Are there any families interested in accommodating them? Please come and talk to me in the office.

Olivia’s Class Week 10 Term 3

Hi Everyone!

Well, the end of the term is nigh and what a term it has been. Student teachers, excursions, visitors and the school concert. The concert seemed to be a huge success last night and the children were fabulous. It endlessly amazes me the extent of their ability to produce a play from start to finish with very little input from adults. It felt rather strange not to come back to school for the social after the concert, don’t forget that it is now on Friday night starting at 6pm. Please bring a plate of food (enough for your family and for 2 others) to share. The school social is also where other performances will take place including guitar groups and a dance learned this term in PE time.

I am sending off all money raised from the MS Readathon and Jump Rope for heart on Friday so please make sure all money is in to me before then. Wendy is collecting money for the 40 hour famine and will also be sending that off on Friday.

Lastly, tomorrow (Thursday) is our moving day! We are moving everything in our classroom next door so that our room can be renovated in the holidays. If you have some time between 1.30 and 2.30 Thursday arvo to help with this, please come in and help. I am also desperate for helpers on co-ordination day to help move everything back into our classroom and setting up. If you could spare some time from midday onwards that day, I would be forever grateful.

That’s all from me today, I hope you all have a relaxing, lovely break.

See you all next term!

From Olivia

Wendy’s Class Week 10 Term 3

We are all in post-performance mode this morning! A bit tired and very pleased with our efforts last night. The whole concert went extremely well, I thought and it was such fun to see the variety of performances and the kids’ enthusiasm and enjoyment. Congratulations to everyone!! And huge thanks to all the parents who helped so much with costumes, music or transporting things there and back. It was much appreciated.

And so we now have three more days in which to finish off for the term… lots of tidying up and filing and other joys! We also have our student teacher, Luke, completing some prac days.

The Social on Friday will start at 6pm and each family is asked to bring dinner with enough to share. PIANO PLAYERS AND GUITAR GROUP WILL PERFORM AT 6:30 SHARP!

All 40 HOUR FAMINE money must be returned by THURSDAY so we can bank it on Friday.

I hope you all have a great holiday!!

Love, Wendy

Preschool Newsletter Week 10 Term 3

Hello Everyone

The concert was fabulous, with colour, humour, inventive costumes and wonderful stories. Preschool sang “The Rainbow Snake” beautifully and the fairies danced with spontaneity and enjoyment, even if some were a little dazzled by the lights and the size of the hall. Thank you to everyone for the huge amount of hard work, and to all the parents who drove children to the practice at the hall yesterday. Thank you, too, to Deb and Lachlan, for spending the day in preschool afterwards, baking biscuits, reading and playing.

The stall for Heartland Children’s Academy raised $536.40. The children, teachers and parents all worked really hard donating, sorting, categorising, baking, selling and buying. Thank you to everyone for their input! It was a very educational experience on many levels - generosity, mathematics, language, decision making and negotiating.

This is the last week of term, and the children have been painting, making collages, making masks and crowns, looking at the silkworms that were given to us and talking about what they would like to learn about next term.

This Friday is the last day of term 3. Preschool re-opens again on Tuesday 14th October 2008. CASP will be open all day, from 8.30am-6.30pm, on Monday 13th October 2008. Put your name down on the list on the CASP sign-on book in the foyer of the main office.

The end of term clean up is on this week. Thank you to everyone who has come in and cleaned or taken things home to wash.

There is a Social on this Friday evening at 6.00pm. Please bring a plate of food to share. This is always a lot of fun. The school is magical by night and the company is always spirited! The food is always delicious.

Thanks to Lucy and Rebecca for taking the silkworms home for the holidays.

A HUGE thank you to Amba, Anthony, Max and Luca, who come and let the chickens out each day on the weekends, and then feed them and put them back in their coop at night.

The mouse is staying at my house for the holidays and Sam and I will get her a companion.

Have a happy holiday, everyone!!

Love from

Sue, Chris and Soojin.

To the Dear Currambena Community,
I want to formally say thank you for your contributions to The Centre for Learning and Children’s Rights Incorporated (CLCR) and the Heartland Children’s Academy (HCA) School project in Nepal for you and your children’s efforts with the stalls held over the last week at Currambena.
In total from the Pre-School and Fran’s class stalls you raised over $500 which is awesome and will go straight towards updating the school’s library, particularly a greater range of books and library furniture.
These are the kind of contributions which allows us to create fantastic educational and life relevant opportunities for the underprivileged children we are supporting through the school project that would otherwise not have access to them.
We are holding a fund raising dinner at the Mustang Nepalese restaurant, Pacific Highway, Crow’s Nest, late November and would greatly appreciate your support in this venture. More information about this will be released closer to the date.
Thank you once again for your valued support and contributions through Pre-school and Fran’s class stalls, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Here is CLCR’S web site for any further information you may require about CLCR and the HCA school project: www.forchildrights.com
Yours sincerely with kind regards,
Pat Price.

Come and look at our Currambena garden!!

No dig vegetable garden

Have you seen Currambena’s new veggie garden? There are potatoes, lettuce, silverbeet, tomatoes, pumpkins and herbs all doing very nicely. And we have only just started.

The first job was to empty the very smelly compost. The compost is now working well with the scraps from lunches and snacks. We need to add a wider variety of materials and need the parents help. Tea bags, coffee grounds, kitchen paper towel, garden clippings and the so, so important, lawn clippings can be brought to the school and added. Please can you bring the lawn clippings in a garbage bag and leave at the garden.

We decided to start a no-dig garden as the soil was sandy and lacking in nutrients and water-holding capacity. The no-dig garden is now becoming very popular with home gardeners and is very easy to do. Layers of newspaper were placed on top of weeds and the existing soil, then manure, compost and a thick layer of mulch. Holes were made in the mulch and seedlings placed in a bed of added mushroom compost. It has been fun and our young gardeners have enjoyed making the garden and are learning about sustainability.

Come and look.
