Conflict Resolution DVD’s are available via the web or from the school office. These are a valuable tool for any one working with 3 to 6 year olds. The DVD was filmed on site at Currambena.
Julianna Term 2 Week 10
Hello Everyone,
Remember this Sunday is our 40th Reunion which is going to be a really fun day listening to 1969 music, catching up with past pupils and old friends, swapping stories and sharing food at the community lunch. Which reminds me, don’t forget to bring that favourite family dish.
Please read the teachers pages to get all the stories from Laura. The feedback in the office is that they had a fantastic time.
We also have good news from our Build Team, the DA to Lane Cove Council was submitted yesterday. If you have not noticed the building plans for the new classroom are on the pin board outside Wendy’s classroom.
Remember next week is the last week of school so…..
Anyone with fees owing need to settle their account
All maintenance hours need to be WRITTEN IN THE BOOK!
With love,
Julianna
The Buildteam term 2 week 10
I’m sorry I missed the deadline for last weeks’ newsletter – I posted my update on line and on the notice board so I hope you all found it. For those of you who didn’t have a chance to look it up I have repeated some of the information today.
Thank you to everyone who has so far contributed with their ideas and enthusiasm to the Currambena building project.
Some of the things that have come up are:
Bike rack, art in the playground, fences during construction, time frames for construction, veggie garden, landscaping, sustainability and recycling of equipment and materials, and a BBQ area.
The project has been moving at an incredible pace up to date and at times it has been difficult to communicate the constant changes to the community effectively. In an attempt to resolve this we are setting up a building notice board which we will update with plans, timeframes and any other relevant information. It will be just outside Wendy’s classroom.
In the last week our architects have been working on the final details of our development application and we have finally got that to Lane Cove Council today. The council required many details for this application, and it took longer than we had anticipated collating all the information.
I will post the submitted plans on the new notice board.
The draft master plan for our playground should be ready by the end of this week and we will be seeking initial feedback from the community by early next term. I know there are lots of ideas and concerns about the playground so we will endeavor to get everyone’s feedback along the way.
Have a great week
Jess (jkimber01@bigpond.com or 0411220111)
Olivia’s Class Week 10 Term 2
Hi Everyone!
Welcome back to everyone who went to Laura. It has been wonderful to hear about the adventures and experiences. We also need to welcome Michael (and his family Polly, Ken and Michelle- in Wendy’s class) who started in my class yesterday.
On Monday, canteen was not on due to no parent volunteers. This means that the children who are depending on canteen do not get food for the day and then the teachers have to organise lunch. If you can help with canteen for a day please make sure you sign up on the noticeboard. Of course, this counts as maintenance hours. Also, it is important that all children bring something to eat even if they are supposed to get canteen just in case it is not on (maybe something that can be eaten the next day if canteen is on).
Our 40 year reunion is on this Sunday starting at midday. The whole school is performing and it would be great if you could all make it. It looks like it will be a fantastic day.
That’s all for this week, short and sweet!
From Olivia
Aussie Kids Week 10 Term 2
Hello everyone
Our visit to Berry Island last week was brilliant. It’s such a rich natural and cultural resource and we are so fortunate to have it so close to school. We look forward to visiting the island again later in the year as it would be gorgeous in summer. Thanks so much to all the parents who made the visit possible.
Next week we will be sending home portfolios. These are a snapshot of some of the work we have done so far this year and the kids have chosen the work that they think is most important to include. After you have had a chance to take it all in over the holidays, we will begin interviews early next term. You will be able to sign up when we get back after the holidays.
Next Tuesday we will be holding a fundraising stall with preschool to raise money for the school in Nepal. We would appreciate donations of toys, games, books and music to sell at this big event. We will also be selling ice blocks on the day so make sure the wallets are well stocked!
We have taken the opportunity of hosting the stall to work on our understanding of money. Work also continues to reinforce numbers with the younger kids and addition with the older group. We are exploring the letter P and related blends and integrating a few known words into story writing.
Last but by no means least we are very excited about the reunion on Sunday and would love to see you there for a laugh… and maybe a boogie? Groovy.
Hope you have a wonderful week!
Fran, Jo and Sarah
Preschool Newsletter Week 10 Term 2
Hello Everyone
It’s Currambena’s 40th Year reunion on Sunday at 12 o’ clock. All kinds of interesting things are planned - a delicious lunch and a sausage sizzle, whole school singing, various speakers, meeting Currambena’s alumni and founders and more. Please come and bring some food to share. There’s a list on the noticeboard where you can write down your contribution.
This week we have been talking about pollution in the sea and mermaids. We are making a mermaid grotto to play in. In Craft tomorrow we are going to do some action painting. Ann, Ben’s mum, is planning on making pancakes with preschool this morning. Last week’s pancakes were delicious and very popular with the children (and adults).
We also went to the park on Monday as we finally had a sunny Monday. Please remember to sign the permission form each Monday morning. It’s on the sign-on sheet. Also, please can people remember to sign the sign-on sheet every day that their child attends preschool? Thanks!!!
The Nepal Stall is being held next Tuesday. Please bring in things to sell and also money to spend on the day. We need things baked for the day as well. Yesterday Preschool had a meeting with Fran, Jo and the Aussiekids to work out how to run the stall.
It’s the second last week of term. A list of cleaning jobs needed to be done has been put on the glass doors next to the lunch table. Please come and put your name down for a job to be done next week. This counts as maintenance so don’t forget to write it up in the maintenance folder in the front foyer of the main building.
The last day of term is next Friday, 10th July 2009. We re-open on Tuesday 28th July 2009. CASP is open for the whole day on Monday 27th July 2009, so see Colin if you would like to book your child in. Amba is also running holiday CASP on certain days. There is a list on the main noticeboard, so write your child’s name down if you need care for them during the holidays.
The chickens need a holiday home for the holidays. If you would like to look after them see me. They need a secure place to sleep at night, fresh food and water each day, a laying box and access to the garden during the day.
Preschool now has a laptop computer! Thanks to Tony, Ferghus’ dad, for getting it up and running.
Chris has been working tirelessly putting out the lost property each morning, both outside preschool and under the blue umbrella. Quite a lot of things have been taken home. Please claim your child’s things as all the left-over lost property will be going to Vinnie’s in the holidays.
Here are some Spanish words and their pronunciations-
vamos (vamos) - let’s go
vamonos (vamonos) - we’re going
uno (oono) - one
dos (dos) - two
tres (trehs) - three
adentro (adehntro) - inside
dime (deemeh) - tell me - you say this when someone calls your name. In English we say “Yes?”, in Spanish you say “Dime”.
There is some more Spanish pronunciation information in the newsletter today.
Love from Sue, Chris and Gabriela.
Wendy’s Class Week 10 Term 2
First this week is to welcome Codey and Michelle and their families to Currambena and to our group! Codey visited last Information Morning and is joining us this week. Michelle is Jody’s cousin and she will be with us til the end of the year. It is great to have them both with us. We are now 19 in our group!
Secondly, thank you so much to Rowena for taking the group while I was at Laura and Cairns with the group of 25 parents and children who were lucky enough to be part of this amazing experience. The three days of the Laura Indigenous Dance Festival were filled with the colours and sounds of aboriginal dancing in the beautiful valley of the Laura River, impassable in the wet season, but a tent city of 5000 people for the festival. We saw rock paintings of quinkins and timaras, swam in the river, watched dancing by day and night and made some great contacts. Next time we go, we have been invited to visit a school in Cairns which is a Centre of Excellence for indigenous dance and sport. Our days in Cairns were filled with trips to Kuranda, Cape Tribulation, Mossman Gorge, the Daintree River (complete with crocodiles!) and the Barrier Reef and, of course, Marco Polo in the hotel pool! We have a wonderful collection of photos and will make sure we set aside an evening early next term to give a presentation about it and begin planning for next time in 2011.
I am still catching up with all the activities of the children who stayed here at school. Particularly stunning is the huge canvas they made… I am hoping we can get it up to the Lane Cove Library for the NAIDOC Week display.
This week we are all looking forward to the Reunion/BBQ/40th Birthday for Currambena on Sunday and hope many of you, our current families, will be there. I need to know which of the piano and guitar players will be there during the afternoon and wish to be part of the entertainment… so please make sure your children know their availability. The opening performance of “We’re the Believers” will be at about 1pm and the other performances from 3pm.
This week our Personal Projects are due on Friday and many children have requested extra class time to work on these. We will certainly be doing this. It is a great help if children can have their information in print form with them (books or pages printed from Wikipedia) and they can use that to create their first draft. Some children are also bringing their partially completed projects on portable storage devices (USB) so they can change or add things at school then take it home easily as well.
Please remember to help with times tables practice at home and encourage reading every night. It will be important to continue this through the holidays as well.
Have a great week … see you on Sunday!
With love, Wendy
Building the Education Revolution
Today we met with our architects and reviewed the documents we are submitting to Lane Cove Council for a development application. The package comprises information from a series of consultants’ reports, and drawings of the building and the landscaped area around it. The statistics that Wendy’s class collected during the front gate traffic survey form part of this - so well done! I’ve posted a copy of the updated plans on the notice board for all to see.
In the last week we have also received our contract from the AIS that details our contractual obligations in receiving the grant money. This is being reviewed by our school council and will be signed and returned by Friday.
Timeframes
So when does this mean we will be starting? The DA will take at least 6 weeks to be approved by Local Council which means we will be going to tender in August and hopefully be beginning to build around September. There was some talk of the demountable being demolished in the July holidays but without the DA this can’t happen now.
There are many considerations we need to make for this period - our children, the gardens, play equipment, shared space, learning areas, safety, access, parking and much more (I’m sure!) We will need help and support from the community in managing these issues but I’m sure it can be done.
In the coming weeks we will be working on the master landscaping plan with the school community so look out for details on how to get involved.
See you around
Jess (0411 220 111 or jkimber01@bigpond.com)
Julianna Term 2 Week 9
Hello Everyone,
This week has been so quiet! Yesterday all the primary kids took off to Taronga zoo and so we only had the Preschoolers. It actually felt a little eerie in the school, even the chickens were wondering around looking rather perplexed, no doubt they were missing their favourite lunches!!!!
Reports have come in about the Laura trip and all is well and the festival sounds like it was an extraordinary experience. Next week we will have the full story in the newsletter.
Today I have been totally engrossed in the meeting with the Buildteam and everything is so close to submitting our building plans to Lane Cove Council for the DA Wow!
Our Buildteam is continuing to do brilliant work. If you see Jessica, Rachel, Danni, Myung Jin or Elaine in the play ground a cheer of encouragement would be great as this is an iron woman race run, swim and peddle!
With love,
Julianna
