Preschool News – Week 9 Term 3

Hello everyone,

There’s been a couple of huge and exciting events since last week’s newsletter.

Firstly, Currambena’s big birthday bash on Saturday. It was fantastic to see so many preschool families at the party. Thank you to all the preschool families who assisted with the day. Thank you also to everyone who baked for the cake stall. A particular special shout out to Steph, Hazel’s Mum, who was at school from early Saturday morning setting up for the day and all the work she did prior to the event organising the plant stall. Many thanks to Abi for her performance, Dee for her amazing drumming and the wonderful Dad Band featuring Craig and Ziggy, our very own preschool dads and, of course, our beloved Michael. The children who assisted Lisa and me in the Lemonade stall were fantastic. It was lovely to hear them confidently and enthusiastically spruik the sale of lemonade to everyone. We figure we sold around 200 cups of lemonade. Thank you for the donations for the lemonade stand to everyone who brought lemons in. They were all put to good use.

We had a great time at the whole school excursion to the Australian Museum on Thursday. Many thanks to Zahli’s mum, Jess, Liam’s mum, Zahra, Stevie’s mum, Laura and Kioto’s mum, Stefanie, for assisting us with this. It was a huge event for the preschool children to be involved in. Everyone did an amazing job in staying with the teachers and touring the museum.

This week, we’ll be putting up the Preschool End of Term Cleaning List. For those of you who would like to get ahead with term 4 maintenance hours, please pop your name down next to a job you can help us with.

Lastly, thank you to Neel for the donation of a game and to Raffy in Amelia’s Class for the donation of some toys everyone is enjoying in preschool. Thank you also to all the families that attended maintenance day the weekend before last, apologies for neglecting to mention how wonderful the school looked in preparation for the school’s 55th Birthday.

Vinnie’s The Purple Hearts – Week 9 Term 3

Hi all,

We have had a busy week! It feels like it has flown by as we wind down for the end of the term.

Thanks to all the help from the parents with our excursion. The children loved riding the bus to the city and visiting the museum.

We spent time this week learning about the Supine Sand Creeper, which is a prehistoric amphibian. It was discovered in 1997 by a chicken farmer in a slab of sandstone from the Sydney Basin and classified in the last few years as a new species by a Palaeontologist working at the Australian Museum. We were stoked to find the actual fossil remains at the museum on Thursday.

The children are excited to curate a dinosaur exhibition for the classroom, and we will finish up our informative writing next week by publishing a book on Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Creatures.

The children enjoyed walking to the library on Monday.

We are coming into our last week before the holidays! Next term, we are back to swimming every Tuesday and beginning the preparation for our end-of-year concert!

Jess’ Group – The Artificial Intelligence – Week 9 Term 3

This week, we started to examine how to measure volume and capacity and the children had a great time experimenting with the conservation of water and sand. There was LOTS of very creative play and everyone enjoyed a little bit of sun outside of the classroom at morning tea and lunch. Tuesday bushwalking was fun (as always) and I heard that Friday was full of creativity.

The highlight of our week was of course our excursion to The Australian Museum and the glorious school picnic in Hyde Park afterwards. Each group had a slightly different experience given that we were all self touring but I heard that dinosaurs, minerals, the taxidermied birds and the kids’ play centre were some of the favourite areas. Survivor tag was a big hit after lunch and everyone was ready for the bus trip back to Lane Cove by the end. Thank you to all the volunteers and helpers!

Amelia’s Group – Week 9 Term 3

Hi everyone,

It has been so lovely being back with the kids for a full week after being away for so long. There has been a lot for me to catch up on, and they were all very eager to fill me in and let me know what I may have missed.

This week, we introduced volume with some hands-on play outside. Jess and I explored volume by making connections to our previous learning on surface area and discussed volume as the area inside of a 3D shape or container. We discussed at what point an object is ‘full’ by packing a container with unifix cubes, then with pebbles, then with sand, then with water. At each stage, we posed to the children, ‘Is the container full? Why/why not?’. We will continue learning about volume next week and into the next term.

On Thursday we had our beautiful excursion to The Australian Museum. Thank you again to my wonderful parent volunteers for supporting the children, despite the late notice. It was a lovely day out as a whole school and a great venue for the children to explore the varied exhibits at their own pace in a small group. We also had enjoyed our lunch and a play in Hyde Park with the beautiful sunny weather. Thank you so much to Vinnie for organising this!

Just a reminder that next week we will have our PIP presentations on the Tuesday and Wednesday, please re-check my email regarding this for the schedule. We will have cooking with Carolina for the Spanish session this week, and on the last day we will watch a movie (likely to be Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!) and engage in any other activities the children vote for in this week’s class meeting.

Sarah’s Group – Week 9 Term 3

It has been crazy week for me outside of the walls of Currambena as I move and move and move and start to put some new roots down.

We’ve had a lovely week with the highlight being our whole school visit to the Australian Museum. Thank you to Vinnie for organising this and thanks to the universe for a delightful day. We were so lucky to have been sheltered from the winds that ripped in as we arrive back at school in the afternoon.

We have a new student, Stella, joining our class from Monday (this week) and we say a sad farewell to Kaihlen, who leaves us. We wish Kaihlen, Brielle, Arne and Aven all the best on their next chapter and thank you for all you brought to the Currambena community.

It’s our turn to return to Lane Cove library so please return all books.

Wendy’s Group – Week 9 Term 3

Hi everyone.

PIP presentations have been a feature of this week, with some very polished and engaging presentations so far. It is a delight to see the progress that children have made over the year in their ability to research a topic, summarise and synthesise information in their own words and then create attractive slides with relevant illustrations. There is, equally, enormous development in confidence in presenting their PIPs to the group, with many more children using palm cards to great effect, managing to give eye contact to their audience while maintaining the flow of their speech. These are significant skills, acknowledging the inevitable nerves and having the courage to go ahead regardless. Some of the older children have been planning their choice of topics very carefully each term… they are well aware that it could be a very long time before they have the opportunity again to choose for themselves the topic they wish to research!

Our whole school excursion to the museum yesterday was a wonderful feature of the week. Many thanks to Vinnie for organising it. It’s great to do something like that all together… many thanks to the parents who gave us their time to come along.

HATS! Please make sure your child has a wide brimmed hat with their name on it here at school every day. A hat kept in their desk is a great option. Now that the UV levels in Lane Cove are over 5 for most of each day, the Bureau of Meteorology recommends sun protection for most of the school hours. Putting sunscreen on in the morning is extra skin protection.

In English this week, we continued with our sentence analysis, use of connectives and punctuation practice. there are great improvements happening in this area. In Maths, we’ve started looking at 2D shapes, naming them and exploring their properties. We’re also continuing to work on area and perimeter and measuring angles.

Our excursion to Ultimate Trampoline Park next Tuesday is booked as our final PE extravaganza! Luckily, Meg, our student teacher, will still be with us, so she can take four children to Northmead for us. We still need car places for five more children. Please let me know if you can help. We expect to leave at 9:30 and return by about 1 pm. The drive to Northmead should take around 35 minutes.

Many thanks and congratulations again to everyone who helped to make the birthday party last weekend such a success. There was such an atmosphere of celebration, and the school looked fabulous with all the bunting and decorations. We’ve enjoyed the leftover cake this week, too!

School Meeting Minutes Week 8 Term 3

Chaired by Bodhi and Aven (Amelia’s Class)

Bodhi and Aven opened the meeting by reading their class’ Acknowledgement to Country. It was beautifully read by the pair.

Sand Pit by Katrina

  • Katrina wanted to remind everyone to please play with the sand only inside the sandpit and not move it up to preschool or outside of its designated area.

Skipping ropes by Wendy and Rome

  • A reminder from Wendy and Rome to be responsible for packing away any school equipment used as the skipping ropes have been left out on a number of occasions.
  • Rome spoke beautifully reminding everyone that it is each persons’ responsibility to pack up after themselves and it is not fair to leave resources out for others to pack away.

Jump Rope for Heart by Wendy

  • Wendy wanted to congratulate everyone for participating in the Jump Rope for Heart this year. We have raised over $2,300 so far! Wendy will keep the donation site open so they can still be donated to, and to let everyone know that prizes will not be handed out until next term.

Sustaining by Wendy

  • In preparation for the 55th Anniversary on Saturday, Wendy asked for everyone’s help to clean and organise the school grounds beautifully for the 300+ guests we will have!

Art Hanging by Chris

  • Chris also wanted to let everyone know about the jobs being done around the school for the Art Exhibition at the 55th celebrations. He also asked for anyone that had not completed their artworks to come to the craft room today as a last chance to finish them.

Jump Rope for Heart Week 8 Term 3

Congratulations to all the children who participated in the Jump Rope event last week! It has been wonderful to see all the skipping in the playground as children continue to improve their skills and get some terrific exercise!

So far, we have raised $2,835 as a school for the Heart Foundation and there is still time to sign up and add to this total.

If you go to this website https://www.jumprope.org.au/parents you can sign your child up so their efforts can be recognised. If you email all your friends and relatives about it, they can donate online and your child can record their skipping activity, even if retrospectively. It’s such a good cause and skipping is such good exercise!

Congratulations to the children who have raised this money so far! Our school account will remain open for two more weeks.

Here is a brief report from Grace about the Jump Rope event at school:

For the Heart Foundation I did a lot of skipping activities,
about 10 minutes each activity. Every time I did 10-15
minutes of 1 activity, I would get a little smiley face on my
hand, if I got 2 I could have some fruit. I got 6 smiley faces
so I did 60-90 minutes of skipping. I volunteered to do an
activity called helicopter where someone swings half a
skipping rope above their head and then let go 1 half of the
rope and spins it around on the ground. This needs about
12 or more people to jump over the rope, and if it hits
someone they are out, it keeps going until there is only one
person standing.
