Preschool Newsletter Week 7 Term 2

Hello Everyone

This week we have been making a marine scene on the big wall. We have painted the sea and are adding paper sea creatures. We also have a blue fabric ocean with plastic fish, sponges and pebbles to play with. In Craft we hope to make some life size sea creatures. We have also been sewing cushions and sea creatures using the sewing machine and making and eating vegetarian sushi.

We are also preparing for the excursion to the Sydney Aquarium at Darling Harbour next Tuesday 16th June 2009. Yesterday we made agreements about the excursion. They are up on the window near the sign on sheet. Children will need to be at school by 9.30am. They will not be taking their backpacks. Their lunch will be carried by an accompanying adult. Children will need to bring their morning tea, lunch and drinks wrapped in wax paper and put in a clearly named paper or plastic bag so that it can be carried in the accompanying adult’s backpack.

We have enough parents for the excursion  now, thank you. Each adult will be given three or four children for the day. Adult helpers please bring a backpack and a mobile phone. Children will need to stay with their assigned adult for the duration of the day. We have hired a bus to take us to the aquarium at 9.45am. The bus will return and pick us up at 1.30pm. We should be back at school by 2.00pm. The cost for the excursion is $22.00 per child and per adult helper. Please pay one of the teachers as soon as possible. Thanks!!

We have had quite a few children arriving late. Preschool starts at 9.00am, with Morning Meeting at roundabout 9.40am. It really helps children settle and feel part of the preschool day if they arrive well before morning meeting so they have time to play.  The whole school meeting will be at 9.30am again for this Friday.

There is a “Farewell to Luuk and Willem Social” this Friday at about 6.00pm. Please come and have a happy time with the Currambena community and say goodbye to Luuk and Willem.  It has been so wonderful having Willem and Luuk’s energy, passion, energy, effervescent good spirits and true care for each child…as well as fantastic sports and dance sessions each week. We will surely miss our Dutch boys!!

The lost property has been put out up at the blue umbrella and at preschool ready for you to claim. We have had a discussion in School Meeting about the amount of lost property and are finding ways to return it to its rightful owners and also stop it from accumulating.

There are headlice about so can every family check their hair and treat if necessary. This needs to become a weekly routine so that it is contained. See the following website for information-

Thanks to everyone who has done our washing and also cut up easel paper.

Our remaining ginger mouse died during the night. We have been discussing the possibility of getting more mice.

Love from Sue, Chris and Gabriela.

Aussie Kids Week 7, Term 2

Hi everyone

This is a mad last minute write up so please excuse the style:

  • Friday night social- come in at 6pm to have a laugh and farewell Willem and Luuk. Please bring a plate to share and rug up!

  • We have begun our Aboriginal Studies to coincide with the Laura trip. We have booked an excursion to Taronga Zoo for Tuesday 23 June so that we can continue our study of the native animals we have chosen as our totems and to take advantage of their ‘Animals of the Dreaming’ presentation. Have a look in the purple room for how we are exploring totem animals, and check out the totem poles outside our classroom.

  • Literacy studies- we are exploring the letter m, blends, exclamation marks and question marks and question words

  • Numeracy- we have been working on numbers, place value, addition and subtraction and multiplication

  • Nits are back- please do all you can to rid these critters from our classroom. To break the cycle, it would be great if everybody could address this this weekend so that hopefully we can be nit free on Monday morning.
  • More egg cartons would be greatly appreciated- a painting session wiped them out

Have a brilliant week!

Cheers,

Fran, Jo, Sarah

Building the Education Revolution Update…

Building the Education Revolution update
In the past week we have met with a variety of people to progress the plans and to get together the information and costings that we need for the funding application. Things have been very busy but also getting very exciting.
We met with Lane Cove Council regarding their planning requirements and our intention to put in a development application in a short while. They advised us of their need for a heritage consultant to look at any plans to build on the site, as well as the need for their tree planners to come and take a look at what trees must be preserved at the school and their sustainability consultant to look at the plans from that perspective.
Mark Baxter, the architect who developed the master plan for the school has agreed to continue to work with us to develop the plans so they can be costed for our funding application. Mark is very experienced in school design projects and we are very pleased to be working with him. He said he was inspired after our initial meeting, which seems to be a good place to start!
It looks likely that the building that we will apply for funding to build will be a purpose-built preschool and we are investigating the details of this at the moment.
Jess Kimber spoke to the students at school meeting last week and let them know what is going on, staff were briefed at their meeting on Monday and school council have been briefed and will meet soon to consider the initial brief and the appointment of the architect. We will keep you up to date as much as possible through the newsletter each week, without boring you to sleep!
Jess Kimber (parent of Darcy in Fran’s and Scarlett in Preschool) is our community liaison and is at school every day and happy to take questions in person or via email: jkimber01@bigpond.com

LIBRARY

Thanks to everybody that has helped in the library, it looks great!

Now we have books to be covered, some in contact, others in plastic. They have been cut to size and are ready to be stuck on, this can be done at home or school.

When finished please leave in the library workroom so we can make a display for the kids.

thanks again

Kerrie.

Building the Education Revolution update

The federal government is providing funding to develop school buildings as part of its economic stimulus package. There is a substantial amount of money available for all primary schools, including independent schools like Currambena.

This week the ‘Currambena Building the Education Revolution committee’* continued to investigate the possibility of applying for funding for some new building work at the school. Potentially we may be able to get up to $850,000 of grant money towards developing the schools master plan (2003). Any new building has to meet sustainable building design criteria, be built in 7 months, and be started on site by end of July 2009!!! Applications are due at the start of May 2009!!.

This week we met with the architect who has worked with the school in the past to get some initial advice on what the government is looking to fund and how our ‘wish list’ matches with their priorities. We also plan to have an initial discussion with Lane Cove Council this week, as we will have to apply for planning approval. In the next few weeks as costings and designs are developed there may be a variety of consultants at the school, usually in meetings or on the grounds.

The committee will be reporting to the School Council meeting on Monday 23 March if anyone is interested in hearing more about the details of the application process. We will also keep up this brief report in the newsletter each week – and hopefully beyond if we are successful.
