To the Dear Currambena Community,
I want to formally say thank you for your contributions to The Centre for Learning and Children’s Rights Incorporated (CLCR) and the Heartland Children’s Academy (HCA) School project in Nepal for you and your children’s efforts with the stalls held over the last week at Currambena.
In total from the Pre-School and Fran’s class stalls you raised over $500 which is awesome and will go straight towards updating the school’s library, particularly a greater range of books and library furniture.
These are the kind of contributions which allows us to create fantastic educational and life relevant opportunities for the underprivileged children we are supporting through the school project that would otherwise not have access to them.
We are holding a fund raising dinner at the Mustang Nepalese restaurant, Pacific Highway, Crow’s Nest, late November and would greatly appreciate your support in this venture. More information about this will be released closer to the date.
Thank you once again for your valued support and contributions through Pre-school and Fran’s class stalls, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Here is CLCR’S web site for any further information you may require about CLCR and the HCA school project: www.forchildrights.com
Yours sincerely with kind regards,
Pat Price.

No dig vegetable garden
Have you seen Currambena’s new veggie garden? There are potatoes, lettuce, silverbeet, tomatoes, pumpkins and herbs all doing very nicely. And we have only just started.
The first job was to empty the very smelly compost. The compost is now working well with the scraps from lunches and snacks. We need to add a wider variety of materials and need the parents help. Tea bags, coffee grounds, kitchen paper towel, garden clippings and the so, so important, lawn clippings can be brought to the school and added. Please can you bring the lawn clippings in a garbage bag and leave at the garden.
We decided to start a no-dig garden as the soil was sandy and lacking in nutrients and water-holding capacity. The no-dig garden is now becoming very popular with home gardeners and is very easy to do. Layers of newspaper were placed on top of weeds and the existing soil, then manure, compost and a thick layer of mulch. Holes were made in the mulch and seedlings placed in a bed of added mushroom compost. It has been fun and our young gardeners have enjoyed making the garden and are learning about sustainability.
Come and look.
We are beginning to receive quotations for the trip we are planning for next year. It is looking very exciting and also eminently possible with an itinerary covering 8 days from June 18th to 25th, with the Laura Dance festival in the middle. Cost is likely to be between $1200 and $2000 each depending on the numbers. There will be another meeting next Wednesday morning at 8:30 for the commitee and anyone else intereseted in being part of the planning.
The sock drive orders have all been delivered and collected. We made $209.00 for the school. Thank you for your support!
Love
Sue
The planning for the proposed trip to Laura next June has progressed this morning and we are almost at the stage of having an itinerary developed and approximate costings. The trip dates are likely to be from Wednesday 17th to the following Wednesday 24th which will include flying to Cairns, camping at the Laura Festival site til the Sunday, visiting ancient rock art sites, spending a day or so in the Daintree Rainforest and possibly more time in Cairns, a trip to the reef (maybe) and then flying back from Cairns. We now need an indication of how many people (adults and children) might be interested in coming on this trip to help with cost calculations.
PLEASE SIGN YOUR NAME ON THE POSTER ON THE NOTICEBOARD TO INDICATE YOUR INTEREST IN COMING ON THIS TRIP NEXT YEAR.
There will be another meeting for the organising group for the proposed Laura trip next week on Wednesday, 3rd September at 8:30 am. Boori called in last week to say all is on track for us to go to the festival in mid-2009 and the dates have been set so planning can take on a new dimension. We also have contact details for two companies who may well be able to assist with travel and other arrangements so let’s get together and start planning some detail!
We are calling for any budding photographers who may have taken, or would like to take photos around Currambena. We need lots and lots of photos of the kids for our marketing department. If you have any you would like to share can you please email them to Karen Brien (Mum of Jack in Fran’s class) at karen@giveorganics.com.au
Thank you
